Received my new SW8 back from Lionel after a warranty repair required since the drive shaft mechanism came apart after just a few trips around the Christmas tree. Another fine quality product from Lionel. They replaced the drive shaft and left oil and grease stains all over the plastic shell of the loco to add to my customer satisfaction. Looking for suggestions on how to clean it up without damaging the paint.

Also, I have a S2 diesel with the same drive mechanism design as the SW8 that I purchased several years ago. I wasn't able to test the S2 when I bought it new until after the warranty expired. It doesn't run correctly. Something appears to be binding mechanically, as it tends to jerk when running forward, and stops when trying to reverse it. Everything is properly lubed. Anyone else encountered this with these types of locos? Just checking before I pay for a repair of another new fine Lionel product.

Hi the Sw8 the first one you described sounds like you could take the plastic shell off the engine and wash it thoroughly with Dawn dish soap that will wash out all the grease or oil then just blow dry with air from compressor or canned air under pressure! that should clean top just fine!

Second engine SW2 could have binding in drive train or just have Debree in the gears around the motor worm or between the wheel gears. if you can figure it out it could easily be repaired!

Thanks, Alan. Removing the shell from the frame is a very complicated process, as its not in one piece like on some diesels. I'll try spot cleaning it with dish detergent, first

For the same reason, I haven't been able to access the drive mechanism on my S2. I didn't want to risk damaging it further by trying to remove the shell pieces. If there is debri causing binding, it left the factory that way. I'll give it another look.

Maybe try a forum search. I recall there was a drive issue with one of the small diesels when Lionel first began equipping then with horizontal drive, could be the s2 if it's an earlier offering.

I believe some were able to remedy it themselves. I can recall if  it was simply a lube issue or a need for adjustment.
