Hello everyone,

I did a search on the forum and did not find any information about this:

Is it safe to use a Swiffer to dust my Lionel Fastrack and to dust my rolling stock and trackside structures?

I use Swiffers to dust off the flatscreen TV and my computer and there haven't been any negative aspects. Before I use one on my OGR stuff, I wanted to check in with the experts here on the forum.

My current layout is a 9 by 8 Carpet Central in my office. I do clean my Fastrack every week or so using a rag. But I have noticed some light dust settling on the track as well as on some of the cars and locomotives that I have parked on the sidings. Same for some of the structures along the layout.

With pollen season bearing down, the last thing I want is to see that light greenish powder-like coating of tree pollen that usually appears on autombiles parked outside. Some of that pollen will inevitably make its way into the house through doors and windows.

Has anyone tried using Swiffers to dust their track, trains and structures? Is there a better device one can use to keep dust at bay?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Terrence

Swiffer WET cloths are treated with various chemicals, not all of them harmless, and their reaction with various finishes would be unknown.  However,  the Swiffer DRY cloths are made of polyester and polypropylene and work by static cling.  They should work well for removing dust from track and layout, vs. just getting it airborne again and spreading it around with brushes etc.  The cloths are soft and are made for smooth surfaces.  My experience is that edges like track joints, or rough surfaces in general, tend to shred the swiffer cloth and leave white fibers.  Nothing gets rid of the dust as well as vacuuming, but that has its own drawbacks.
