Hey folks welcome to another edition of Switcher Saturday!   In this weekly thread we celebrate the versatile locomotives known as Switchers.  Whether rearranging the yard, spotting cars as the local, or hustling around the docks, these are the machines that move that last mile and put the loads where they need to be. This thread is always open to switchers of all scales and gauges.

Switchers engine enjoy a reputation of being able to do all jobs as assigned.   In this case, we have a diesel shunter on snow duty. The difference is its brought to you via tweet by the railroad ministry of India.

Now as dependable as they normally are,  everything needs serviced sooner or later.  So how do you change a gearbox on a Republic Locomotive unit?  Well,  given the design of these machines,  the first thing you do is simply take off the top! I stumbled across this scene early in the week. 20220110_10165820220110_10393620220110_11105820220110_111134

I stumbled across the scene above early in the week.  While having an overhead  crane is essential,  the track pit is not needed. When you lift off the top the lower portion reminds me of a big roller skate.

And because sometimes you just see cool stuff, here's a few pics posted with permission of reddit user devilseagle01.

This was the Canton Railroad switching Boise Cascade in May of 2021. That paint scheme is sharp!

Good morning fellow switcher lovers!!   JHZ53 thanks of the early throttle notch out and getting us rolling early!  Also love the photos of the 1:1 gauge switcher under repair ... very cool

Tom - great video!!  Got to love those FM locos!

Today on the Free State Junction Railway, the company photographer has been busy photographing switchers doing their thing.  Have a wonderful and safe weekend everyone!!

Washington Terminal Co. RS 1 number 46 has been assigned to the Mountain Division this week.  Here we see her pulling a local freight trundling across the Bollman Bridge.  IMG_6815

Happy SWSat!

Great pix and scenes so far today.

I have a newly arrived switcher to show off today. It's a MTH SW 8 # 499 with PS2. It's my hometown line, the LIRR too. The paint scheme is fantasy, but they did keep the LIRR orange on the pilots, hood, and grab irons. The prototypical scheme would have seen the body painted a charcoal gray with the orange details. The LIRR Dashing Dan decals are a nice touch too.

I gave it a quick service and changed the battery to a BCR last night and shot some pix on the shake down run. Runs nice and smooth as you would expect from MTH.

Procter & Gamble S-2 pulling out of the shed, headed to St Joseph towing a Goodyear tire truck that someone forgot to turn off the lights?  As the barter economy picks up, this truck will be traded for a boxcar of Folger’s Coffee down in Kansas City. . .

K-Line dual motor, from my 1990 P&G set - conventional control.  Upgraded with OSI e-unit.

Last Saturday’s posting of a MEC plow extra on the world famous OGR Forum didn’t go unnoticed by some other proud railroaders.  The crew of plow equipped D&RG switcher no. 53 - engineer Spike Trackman, fireman Ty Tack and brakeman “Caboose” (named for the caboose around his middle) Cupola - came to your Yardmaster to ask they also be recognized for their dedication to keeping the rails clear of snow.

Your Yardmaster, of course, was more than happy to grant their request.  Now all they need is some snow to show off their skill.  With the current temperature at 7 degrees (up from 1) in Central MA, with below 0 wind chill, the crew should be happy they’re not plowing today!
