Good morning Switcher Saturday crew.  We're off to a more conventional start time today.

On my railroad to nowhere everyone will have a busy weekend preparing for ghosts and goblins to visit.   Here we see everyone's favorite tank engine setting out a special caboose.

For those unfamiliar,  Switcher Saturday is a weekly thread celebrating the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.  All scales and gauges are welcome.

So please share your photos and videos.

Have a great weekend everyone,  and congratulations those who made it to York, I hope you all have a great time.

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

Good morning SwSat fans!  Today we find our favorite shop switcher X-8688 taking a break for lunch at the local cafe.

It’s a busy morning at the cafe!  The area sports car club has gone for a brisk morning drive over the mountain, stopping at the cafe for refreshment.

Vasik Semaphorowski, X-8688’s fireman, is a sports car fan, like your Yardmaster.  The black Triumph TR3A in the photo is Vasik’s car; he offered it to a friend for today’s drive because he had to work.  Vasik is off next Saturday, so he’s anxious to get back behind the wheel on the next tour!

I sure hope Lionel got the tooling for that one!

Joe,

Thanks. I agree. I hadn't run this A-5 in a while, so I spent some time dusting it off and looking it over. I couldn't help but admire it and thought the same thing. MTH made (makes?) a high-quality product. I hope they do not sell their product line to another manufacturer. Why should a competitor get credit for the fine steam engines that MTH brought to the market? I do hope that MTH sees its way to re-running some of its steam engines under the new business model, but I think it's not likely to happen.

Hi SwSat fans...what a great bunch of pictures already (1000 in Texas)... I have been absent for 3 weeks due to travel, so I thought I would try to make some of that up today.  jhz563 thanks for starting us off and for allowing Thomas to pull that Halloween caboose.  Trumptrain - beautiful pictures but I especially love that handsome B&O GP-9.  Steam Crazy - my first car was a 1959 red Triumph TR 3A with real knock off wire wheels (tire change kit came with a brass mallet).  Strap Hanger and TnkMarx love those 44 tonner's. That has become a real popular engine especially to those of us with small layouts. I have 2 that I run on my inner loop and 0-27 switches.   RSJB18 liked the #624 in the C&O color scheme.  Melgar that A5 is amazing, the valve gear is really detailed.

So what about me today.  I decided that to make up for some missed Saturdays I would post two switchers.  First a road switcher by Lionel.  The #2328 Burlington GP7 from 1956-58 taking a small train from our Yard in Savannah to an exchange up in Macon.  Why would the Burlington be in southern Ga?  Well that is left to your imagination!

Lionel Burlington Road Switcher

From a much later period (like 30 years later!) The Lionel (MPC) #8314 2-4-0 Southern Streak from 1983-85  moves a caboose hop up the line from the Savannah Depot.  The Lexington and Savannah has a very close relationship with Southern and exchanges traffic and motive power with them often.  So a little less imagination is needed for this photo as compared with photo #1.  This guy is a one of a few odd balls that Lionel experimented with in the 1980's...he is DC powered and needs a DC type power pack.  Luckily for many of us, Lionel did not keep up that experiment for too many years.

By the way, this humble little loco had its own CATALOGED set in 1983-85.  Yup, he was a featured item in the catalog.  Picture below. DC power, headlight, reverse from the power pack (of course its DC) and "mechanical sound of steam" (there is a plastic roller in the tender, filled with pebbles, that rotates as the train moves-loud and distinctive - think small rocks in a tin can-  but its relationship to the "sound" of steam is a matter of opinion!!)

Happy Saturday to all.  Have a great weekend

Don

I agree, this A-5 is just amazing.  I was never able to pick one up.  Maybe next time I have the opportunity my automobiles won't be screaming for attention!

A small layout’s best friend…the switcher.  Thanks to York I’ve added a new LV GP-9 and a like new LV SW-1.  Also posing this dreary Saturday morning are the LV VO-1000,   a LV 44 tonner,     the Reading NW-2, and GP-7.  Feeling left out, a RDG GP-30 appears from across the bridge.

Silver Lake, what gauge are your trains, they are colorful and unique, nice layout….

I “switched” from 3 rail O scale to 2 rail O scale. You know just to make it harder. My layout is just a switch layout on the top of my bookcases. To work it or take pictures I have to stand on a short ladder. Thus are the issues of an O scaler in Manhattan.

This week I had to go up to do some things upstate. So I get to add some handrails on my 1 to 1 scale but gaugeless caboose because I have not reinstalled the track or found wheels. In my original post you can see my o scale model of it in the third picture. The 1 to 1 is sitting on original ties in a former mill yard. The mill is long gone but can see the old mill office (our family home) in the back.

I am waiting for the perfect switcher to push this around. It could make a fun Inglenook. Some day.

Last year the photographer got some close ups of ES6 #9138 moving a reefer to the ice rack.  Purchased in 1945, the ES6 was not the first diesel the Pennsy bought, but it was the first diesel it bought in large numbers.  The EMD 567 600hp V6 in the SW-1 version was an improvement over the Winton 201-A 600hp straight 8 in the earlier SW.

The ES6 (EMD SW-1) is MTH, reefer is Atlas.
