Switcher Saturday: 2016-Mar-26

Happy Switcher Saturday and Happy Easter everyone. My contribution is a Pennsylvania Railroad B6sb (#4001) which was stored servicable in Columbus Ohio. Wood on its cab window, the Joyce Avenue coaling facility looms large in the background. The locomotive was scrapped by 1957.

That's a great picture Tom!  And thanks for asking how I'm feeling, I'm 100% better than last week and ready to head to my in-laws house for some good old-fashioned family time and grub!

Here's another picture of NYC #9000, it's a real nice locomotive and I'll need to post some crisper pictures here of it one of these weeks!

Things are off to a great start so far this week. 

Today I literally dusted off my micro layout and found that it is not much up to running without some pretty major structural surgery. But it still looks OK for pics, so here we go.  

The Tiny Island Nation of Egg is next to Easter Island and doesn't quite have the tourist draw or giant heads that it more famous neighbor has. Instead it is the worlds one source of Black Licorice Jellybeans. The country mines and exports these all year while planning for the big once a year rush. 

For now the railroad uses a second hand former Astoria Power and Light Porter tank engine and former Reading 19th century Ore Jimmies. 

Happy Easter. Tomorrow be sure to dye your mouth black with some Black Jelly beans from this tiny Island nation and its little railroad.

Also I'm happy to hear that you are feeling better Rich. These transition times and crazy weather are hard on me too.

I've been quiet of late in this thread, as well as the HONGZ Weekend Photo Fun thread.

Reason: My "newest" computer has been in the shop forever, and thereon exists my sizable photo collections. In the meantime, I'm stuck on this old machine of mine, where scant few pictures reside. (Plus, I've been working 6 day work weeks since the first of January, as well as having two major dental surgeries and follow ups, etc, etc. In otherwords: LIFE has caught up with me.)

HOWEVER... I always keep up with this thread and enjoy it, so come on: Post guys (and gals), post!!

it sucks when real life interferes with our fun. I feel your pain, our comp was in the shop a few weeks back.

Not judging at all, just mentioning, and not involved in the sale... the 203 has the shorter boiler and the shorter tender which the factory issued with "Lionel Lines" on it.

Ok, I'm reaching back into my old photo albums for this one.  I took the following photo back in January of 1989 when I was living in Michigan.  This is a scanned version of my original colored 3.5" X 5" print, so please excuse the not-so-sharp image.  "Family Lines" (SCL/LN) #3000 was switching cars around the rail yard across from Ford Motor Company's Rouge Assembly Plant.

Unique-looking diesel to say the least!  The end of the long hood looks "GE", the trucks look "Blomberg" (which, correct me if I'm wrong, are typically associated with EMD products), and the front end/cab...I don't even know what to say about that!!

Can anyone here tell me what the heck I captured on film that day over 27 years ago?

It looks like a mack truck and uBoat were put together! but it certainly is a cool engine

This is a BQ23-7. SCL was the only one that got these with the Comfort cabs (proto Wide cabs). Some even made it into CSX paint. I've always liked these. I remember visiting family near Williamsburg VA in the 1980's and seeing these. 

Bachmann made these in HO in the 80's in a pack with a caboose. I remember seeing these at Kay Bee Toy and Hobbies. Back when mainstream toy stores sold toy trains. I have one mint in the box. One of my very few pieces of HO.   Very nice catch.

Wow, thanks for the quick response, Silver Lake!  I had a feeling one of you guys would be able to provide the details.  So, based on the "BQ23-7" model designation, I assume this was a G.E. product...am I correct?

Yes a BQ23-7 is a GE model. A GE b23-7 with an experimental wide cab. GE should have studied the Canadian cab design and applied it to that model or use the nose of the P30CH or the Santa Fe U30c Cowl units.

Gotta love switcher Saturday.  I hope you all didn't like that PPL paint scheme I had to show you the other week, it'll never be the same now!

And, just for fun, here's something else I came across at work last week.  Technically a car mover not a switcher,but it was spotting a car and it does have side rods!
