Maybe a prior owner of mine switched the 6220 shell (definite bellringer) with a 623 shell.

A bell ringer (6220) in good operating order can be gotten for around $100. Marveloous piece, especially one made in early 1950s with good Magnetraction and coil couplers. Its also got heft and is a good puller.
Yes... my 623 1952-54 runs well and the magnetraction is still strong.

Not sure of exact model numbers but the 623 was made in both versions. Mine does not have the bell and I prefer it that way.

It's a work in progress Joe- I keep looking and buying when I see them. Problem is my layout is too small to keep all of them running.

Bob is like me, trying to find them as inexpensively as possible. Western Depot has lots of K-line at near retail prices. If you really have to have one then Western Depot is the place to go.
Just to keep things on topic, here's a MP15 rescue that was sent to me a few weeks back:
A bit of soldering on the reverse board got it working acceptably...
