Switcher Saturday: 2018-November-17

Good morning, Tom. Hope to see you at the Westchester Train Show on December 9th.

Long Island Railroad 1553 is a K-Line model of an Alco RS-3 road switcher that I purchased about 15 years ago. K-Line also made a set of LIRR passenger cars in the same color scheme. In my opinion, the quality of this locomotive is at least equal to the RS-3 models that I have from other manufacturers.

I was unfamiliar with the pre-war 228 and 227 in Tom's initial post today, but it sure looks a lot like my bell-ringing Postwar 1656:

This one is really a fun piece. Based on a real narrow gauge chassis and with a car motor and parts.

You can see it in France at the "Chemin de fer des Chantraines" a narrow gauge tourist railway.

I wasn't sure what to post this week but since @MELGAR put up that sweet RS-3 (definitely need to find one of those), I thought some more K-Line LIRR equipment was in order.

Thanks Tom! At this moment I am planning to go to the WhitePlains show but we shall see...

This week I have some Roster Shots of my K -Line Astoria Light Heat and Power (oversized) Porter. These really scale out to a nice 1/32 scale Narrow gauge engine but they are fun. Here in NYC this week I have been thinking a lot about heat especially after Thursday’s commute home from work. 

Astoria and Long Island City are in the news this week also along with Crystal City VA because of the announcement of Amazon’s headquarters. The move will really affect what is left of ALH&P operational area along with some of The former site of RF&Ps Potomac Yard in VA.

If anyone is near Carlstadt NJ today swing by the NYSME layout. I will be running today.

Relatively good model masking available at most hobby stores.  The trick is to get the tape applied well and use the air brush in a way that, the air/paint stream, is flowing away, from the edge of the tape.   White was applied first, then Red, final paint was Blue.  There was touch-up on or near some of the deep body detail grooves.  Two coat to be applied after the initial three paints.  A gloss coat, then decals.  Gloss coat matches the background of the decals.  Then a dull coat on some of the engines. 

Some of the Montour masking. Note that the walking deck was not masked, the angle of  yellow paint application important.  Note the over spray on the paper and masking.  Pilots and flexible walk step have been added.

Melgar, K-line was making some really nice stuff at the end.  Too bad we lost them.  Even some of the earlier stuff like like Bob's MP15 and FA had better detail and performance than Lionel equivalents of that time period.

 Tom - thanks for taking the throttle this morning and getting us rolling!!  Love the 228 and 227 especially the shot thru the signal bridge ... looks really cool!!

Rich - I agree with Tom, you are a Super Dad!!  Best wishes to your daughter at her tournament

On the west side of California’s San Joaquin Valley, Southern Pacific serviced the different packing houses that processed locally grown vegetables that were eaten across our great country.  Hope everyone has a super weekend.

Tom, I went to high school in New Rochelle but lived in the Bronx.  Made for a lot of travelling and a lot of back-road knowledge ox the Bronx and lower Westchester.

Hey ...these are allowed I think as most have switches on them. Way cool and highly regarded...you can kick out the jams with your stuff.  Not all of my gear is at this location..this is my gigging gear...you gotta have the hat to gig     Fendermain

Tele is early 90s USA standard with 51 nocaster bridge PU... bought new... 1 refret so far.  All three have mojo...I consider the Q an instrument ...very touch sensitive.  What's your current tele?   Thanks

Monsiuer Fendermain, mine? A Parts caster, one piece alder(?)old piece of grainy wood, a thin worn lacquer, chipped from use, spectacular highly articulate Lolars vintage tele single coils, brass vintage tele bridge barrels, aged USA upgraded electronics and aged vintage vol /treble curled  knobs, and a curly maple C neck with medium frets, customized fretwork,fretboard golden  light lacquered, a 50's spec body with a 60's spec neck, feels like a cross between my long lost 68 fender tele and an older one I had. I have a black pickguard but just time machine it back when using the single ply white and sometimes the worn ashtray cover. It isn't an American custom shop but it feels right.

 I Once had a pre CBS 57 beater with a PAF humbucker nailed in the neck position that came in a blue chipboard alligator case for $135 long long ago! A neck action feel Like silk. Stolen, stuff happens,  I had a 68 stock new tele in high school in 68. Got a lot of mileage. A couple of tokai, a few early Mexican Teles but this one below is OK. Lol. I don't get too  attached to string things, except when they're gone! I am however attached to my PW Lionel trains.

i hope we don't get kick off of switcher Saturday sharing planksters! Lol.

This is pretty much what my classy (?) table will look like. That's my wife who used to leave in the middle of the show to go home and medicate the doggie and then return...now it's easier to have her stay home.
