Switcher Saturday: 2019-February-16

My wife and I are off to Boston for the day - so we're up early and about to leave. Have a good SWSAT.

My MTH Premier Providence & Worcester GP40 #3001 arrived this week. I guess it’s technically a road-switcher, but it’s very large, and probably not used for switching – so I wouldn’t insist it’s really a switcher. However, I think it’s a really nice model. Perfect paint and assembly. Test run satisfactory in conventional – the only way I operate. Startup, prime-mover, horn and bell sounds load and clear. The Providence & Worcester Railroad was chartered in 1844. I used to see maroon and red P&W diesels in New Haven until the November 1, 2016 sale of the P&W to Genesee & Wyoming – but none recently.

Melgar I used to watch those PW GP40s switch paper cars to the Providence Journal newspaper plant on Harris Ave when I was walking to collage from my apartment so I think of them as switchers even while they were making me late to class. Congratulations on your article in the Magazine! Love that Narragansett Reefer you snuck onto the cover. 

This week I opened a nice package from Germany. It definitely fits the switcher category and is a Steam Dummy. These were popular in Urban areas from the 1870’s through the turn of the century. In Europe they were usually called Trams. These were small steam engines with full passenger or trolley  bodies wrapped around the boilers. They usually also had skirting covering the wheels and drive mechanisim with the idea that this would not scare horses. 

The New York Elevated RR used these a lot and many went on to work as contractor engines, mining and logging. The New York Central had a few Dummy Bodied Shays that they used on 9th Ave to work from 33st to John St Terminal before the High Line went in. 

Mine I think is a German prototype but I have not been able to find an exact match. I gave it a bit of a shake down run at the 2 rail Oscale NYSME layout. Here it is sharing yard duties with a Yoder 44 tonner.

I have always really liked the looks of these little guys.I am happy I was finally able to find one . Although it is geared low and slow it is probably one of my fastest engines. It made it from Germany to my home in 2.5 days.

Motive power on the Plywood Empire Route is an NW2. This shortline has elements of the B&O branch that served the refineries of Petrolia and Karns City, Pa as well as the modern-dy Oil City and Titusville. A short "mainline" with lots of switching serving several industries. Someday I'll repaint that old UP engine......

Daniel. That looks really nice. Is it made by ETS in Czechoslovakia? I have a few of their nice products. They are a funny hybrid of well detailed tinplate.

This little tram is not made by ETS. It is made in very small serie by a talented man in Germany who also replicate gauge one three rail tracks and some other very nice models. He doesn't makes any publicity to sell his models and you have to know who he could be... I am still searching... Daniel

Not only did I wake up late, I had to take my older daughter to a school thing, so I stopped by the club and ran a train for a bit (of course a switcher).

Great stuff guys!  Happy SWsat!!  Today's first pic is of the MTH portable layout at the B&O Museum Christmas season 2017 ... next a Patapsco and Back Rivers VO1000 rounds the curve at Butler Junction in Patsburg ... final is a B&O dockside exiting the east tunnel on the Free State Junction Railway's Mountain Division.  Have a wonderful weekend everyone!! 

LionChief Plus • New • Milwaukee Road NW2

I did have some minor issues with this locomotive and I had to send it back. This video will cover those issues. Lionel did send me a return authorization number and a Fed-X return mailing label.
