Hi there Switcher Saturday faithful !

Switcher Saturday is a recurring weekly thread dedicated to celebrating the smaller, nimble,  jack of all trades locomotives,  known collectively as Switchers.   From ancient saddle tak steamers working the docks, to first gen diesels husseling the local, to modern multi gen-set machines working class 1 yards, Switcher locomotives come in all shapes and sizes and they are all welcome here.

Switcher Saturday is always open to all scales and gauges.

I have shown you all pictures several times of the Republic Locomotive unit at my work.   Well I finally caught the coal yard getting ready to move the compact little beast, and I caught the whistle on video.  Yes, I said whistle. The locomotive was requested to be equipped with a whistle meant to make "A mournful southern sound." The man who specified the locomotive, being of origin below the Mason Dixon line, wanted a whistle but specifically did not want a "Northern Screamer."  How well that was accomplished I will let you decide.

So please, share your pictures,  videos, vignettes and stories.  Have a great day folks

Happy SWSAT!

It looks like two boxcars have arrived from Maine - Bangor & Aroostook #1407 (by Weaver) and Maine Central #36123 (by Atlas O) and are now on the New York Central Railroad behind NYC 0-8-0 #415 and ahead of NYC caboose #19654 (by MTH). Pictures and videos on my 10’-by-5’ layout – just an oval with scenery.

New York Central #415 is a scale-sized MTH Railking model (30-1123-1 with PS1) of a USRA 0-8-0 steam switcher that appeared in the 1997 Volume 2 catalog at an MSRP of $399.00. Mine has a BCR and has been running on my model railroads for almost 25 years.

Between 1918 and 1920, the United States Railroad Administration nationalized U.S. railroads to ensure efficient operation during World War 1. The USRA also designed standardized 0-6-0 and 0-8-0 switchers as well as other types of steam locomotives. A total of 1,375 0-8-0s were built to the USRA design during and after the war. The engine and tender weighed 364,000 pounds. The engines ran at 175 pounds-per-square-inch boiler pressure and developed 51,042 pounds of tractive force.

Good morning fellow switcher fans!!  JHZ 563 thanks so much for notching out the throttle and getting us rolling .... and thanks for sharing the video of the little switcher that whistles!!  Very cool sound!!

Everyone has wonderful photo and videos up this morning.  I had fun watching all the great movies with switchers in action from your layouts.   Thank you all for sharing!!   I hope all of you have a terrific weekend!!

Today on the FSJR it's about end cab switchers with the exception of the top photo of an 0-8-0 pushing a air dump car. 648BC4F7-4BDD-47C1-A386-0B7126B1D447_1_105_c

Hello folks on this fine SwSat !.  Great pictures and videos all, but Strap Hanger - "Sponge Bob" takes the cake!!

My input this morning is from the PRR - despite all the NYC photo's today.  Its the Lionel # 2295 0-6-0 tank switcher and I tried to capture it hard at work on the Leonardtown and Savannah moving freight in and around the yard.  Unfortunately my video camera work suffers from one hand on the camera and one on the ZW!. Well anyway, here she is working hard on this find Saturday.

Here she is moving a single box car into the yards, note this box car has just arrived in Savannah from the Galveston wharves.

Here is a short video of her in motion, please excuse the poor camera work.

Happy SwSat everyone...best wishes to all, have a great weekend.

Lionel 2295 Tank Switcher

Fall of '64...

KC&G NW2 #136 trundles along in the Riverfront District on the Missouri side of Kansas City as it goes about its business of switching the customers therein as the "Day Job". (The Night Job has the dubious moniker of being called the "Alley Cat", but no such nickname has yet stuck to the Day Job.)

Both jobs that work the Riverfront District are real "beans n' taters" jobs. Nothing glamorous about them. Both jobs mainly run about among the buildings in the Riverfront District switching the various docks, doors and what have you, all in the effort of trying to help the KC&G make a living on the steel rails of commerce.

No, working a lowly switch job like either the Day Job or the Alley Cat, there's no "romance of the high iron", or any such thing. However, you get to sleep in your own bed every time you finish your shift, so it takes lots of whiskers to hold such a job... the Day Job more so than the Alley Cat.

JHZ, thanks for getting us rollin’ again!

Your Yardmaster grabbed his camera and headed East today to the B&A Boston-Worcester line in Westborough, MA.  It’s 1950, many locomotives in NYC (owner of B&A)  livery have begun to appear on the B&A tracks.  NYC 0-4-0 no. 901 was filmed at this location with a work extra.

John I like that flat car with the Rail trucks on it nice video.

Thanks guys.   I picked that up years ago and my kids loved it.  However, JHZ previously posted videos of a  whole sponge bob set, including a nice little engine.  I regret missing that when it first came out.

I don't have that set - but I think I remember it being shown on #SWSAT before.  I had no idea there was an operating car with spongebob poking out. Now I am sorry I passed over it.

My bad, JHZ. I got you mixed up with Bryce.  Here is his post from a different thread -
