Hello Switcher Saturday crew.  Our nation mourns again this weekend,  even as we head into a weekend of remembrance for our honored dead from over a century ago.  I have children basically the same age as those ripped away from their families in TX this week, and a brother who is a high school teacher.   I can't begin to understand what those families are going through.

I hope to bring a little levity and joy.  So for this weekend's thread we will kickoff with probably the most whimsical Switcher locomotive I have,  the Lionel Crayola locomotive .

20220527_21134020220527_211644

Now, for those that don't know,  Switcher Saturday is a recurring weekly thread celebrating the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.   Switcher Saturday is open to all scales and gauges.  The only rules to Switcher Saturday are to keep things somehow Switcher related,  follow the ogr tos regarding pictures,  and have fun.

Have a good weekend folks.

From Wikipedia:

         In Flanders Fields
In Flanders Fields, the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
         In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
         In Flanders fields.

jhz563,

This is indeed a most somber Memorial Day weekend. You are right to remember. I prepared this post before the events of this past week.

This is my New Jersey train – headed by Central Railroad of New Jersey USRA 0-6-0 #107. This Atlas O locomotive is very well made, highly detailed, and has realistic steam sounds and whistle, but the stiff tether and engine-to-tender coupling are problematic. I would like to see Atlas O make more die-cast steam engines or even rerun this USRA 0-6-0 with an improved tether, but I doubt they will. The CNJ boxcars #22485 (blue) and #25624 (oxide red) are by Weaver, and the CNJ caboose #91530 is by MTH. As it circles my 10’-by-5’ layout in the video, the scale speed is 32 miles-per-hour.

Good morning, SwSat nation!  Today your Yardmaster went to New Haven’s South Worcester yard.  He found NH RS3 no. 538 and GP9 no. 1205 awaiting clearance to haul a freight to New London, CT.

The MTH RS3 was my first modern era diesel acquisition in 2002.  It still runs well despite being equipped with the much maligned 5 volt board.  The MTH GP9, a dummy, is my latest diesel acquisition.  I bought it at the NETCA show last Saturday.

To all our fallen soldiers and victims of senseless, preventable mass shootings: R.IP.

Happy Switcher Saturday from Finland.

20220526_135731

Maine Central ALCO S2 #301 is ready to start the day`s work.

20220525_185641 1

The quietness of the countryside is briefly broken by Maine Central`s ALCO S2 #301 as it bypasses a local farm carrying miscellaneous freight to industry.

20210325_12185520220217_215949

The father has gone fishing with his son, knowing that he can follow the local rail traffic himself at the same time.

After Bangor & Aroostook EMD BL2 #57 has left its cars at the local station, the Boston & Maine railroad company ALCO S2 #1264 arrives at the site and moves a few cars to a nearby textile factory.

Another fine SWSAT.  Thank you all for your contributions and John for keeping us going.

Patrick another great collection of scenes on the Free State Junction.

Mel your balance between layout size and the size of your equipment and trains is perfect.  Every piece fits together to maintain that balance.  With all the fabulous trains manufactured in the last 20 years you haven't strayed from that balance.  I didn't possess such self control and have more than a few pieces that while they will operate on the layout I will have I suspect they will look out of place on such a small pike.

Tom what is that load on the Pennsy flat car?

Ron

That is a freelance load I made specifically for the car.  I picked up the K-Line 16-wheel flat car at a recent train show.  I needed a load to justify having such a large car.  I used Plastruct components from my inventory and a piece of 2" PVC pipe.  I still need to make decals and tie downs to secure the load.

The backstory:  The Bradford-Underwood Manufacturing Company is a fictional industry on my layout that builds industrial filtration systems.  This unit is a high capacity filtration system destined for a government facility.  It is a Model BU115H1T FILTRATION SYSTEM. The B-U plant is serviced by the AC&Y.  The AC&Y will deliver the load to the Penn Central who will forward it to its destination.

Johan, great photos, as usual!  I’m sure our SwSat brothers will agree we’re looking forward to welcoming Finland to NATO!

Thanks John. I have long been of the opinion that Finland should be in NATO, although it must be remembered that nothing is certain when, for example, the President of Turkey opposes a NATO application from Finland and also from Sweden. I also believe that the Russian dictator wants to cause us more annoyance.

Great stuff everyone. I can just look and look at BAR GP7’s work! This morning I am going down some what of a memory lane. With the Lionel GP30 in Chessie System paint.  My favorite looking engines as a kid. Just like I remember them. With the CSXT patch and stencil job. I consider myself lucky to have witness the rainbow years of CSX. It’s a fond enough of a memory for me to try modeling it thirty years later.  Also the new Lionel CR mill gondola. I did a little weather job, some crappy graffiti, and made a “baled scrap” load, re-stenciled NYC ( I see that from time to time on CSX equipment). Have a great weekend everyone!565BB2AC-E5C6-4CAC-B611-EE988D6D3A61

Joe,

Thanks.

One of my objectives in building the 10'-by-5' model railroad was to convince myself of what could be done by way of scenery, structures and trains on a small layout. I could have built a larger layout but that wouldn't have been as much of a challenge and I tend to be a minimalist in everything I do - except for how many model trains I buy... I also kept the layout small so that it can be easily dismantled and transported if necessary.

Thanks Jesse. Your layout looks really great too, I especially like those background buildings. Sometimes I owned the Atlas Chessie System GE U23B, but it seems to go on barter when I fell in love with the Maine's nature and the railroad companies.

Johan

Well as JHZ has said, this is a Memorial Day weekend where we honor our service members who gave all to defend our freedom and secure our way of life.  This weekend we also mourn the death of so many defenseless children and people at the hands of cowards and hate mongers who insult the very foundation of our country and the sacrifice those soldiers made.  May the Lord bring the families and friends of the victims as much comfort as possible.

For me, I guess I have to again follow JHZ's lead and try to be as whimsical as possible.  Today, let me take you again on a time travel trip.  It is the United Kingdom and the world wide Great Depression is on everyone's mind.  The dream of young people for a train for Christmas is probably way beyond the possible.  To make that dream as likely as possible, Mecanno Ltd. the maker of Hornby trains brings forth a new line, the M0 line...far less expensive and thus perhaps within the each of many more families.  So here is the Hornby M0 locomotive, in its first configuration in 1930.  They made two (one red one green) but otherwise the same.  No frills, no fancy valve gear not even for the driving rods, a circle of track and possibly one or two wagons or passenger cars...but what a thrill it would have been to that young person at that time.

Here she is, the Hornby M0 locomotive of 1930.

Dave. Thank you very much for your kind words. Now if you ever have to react to the actions of that mad dictator. Putin certainly imagined otherwise but in fact he burned almost all of his bridges, probably permanently. NATO is now stronger than ever.

Wow what a great looking Switcher Saturday everyone!

Johan, Patrick, Melgar, Lee, Bob, Jessie, John, Ron, you guys always have amazing photos, your setups are the stuff of envy!

Don, that Mecanno looks great.

So to help a little more,  here's a Lionel family picture 🙂

After I took this picture I realized there's one more of these in my house,  the lionchief pink petshop unit.  It's my daughter's and is currently packed up.

Have a blessed weekend everyone.
