Hello Switcher Saturday fanatics!  Welcome to another edition of our favorite weekend thread.   For those new to the crew, Switcher Saturday is a weekly thread celebrating the smaller locomotives that do the big work of railroading.   We are open to all scales and gauges,  as long as it's somewhat Switcher related. 

For this weekend's kickoff image we have a colorful scene of a custom painted lionel 4 wheel diesel spotting some jack-o-lanterns at the Steelers depot.

Today we have a old Lionel NW2 dropping off a All Nations Boxcar I Custom painted and decaled at the C.E.S. Warehouse.  I bought this DT&I shell off eBay for a very low price and done a swap with my Santa Fe one. Enjoy your weekend.

Off to a great start. I do like that DTI NW2 Lee. I have one that I added the orange dynamic brake blister from the WP&Y NW2 to. The orange plastic is a very close match. I doubt he DTI ever needed this serious a brake package on their route.

ere are some old pics of my repainted Lionel 520 shifting a gondola on my old layout. I have always liked this engine style. I remember carefully sanding that OGR building in the second picture to make the window spacing more even.

LIRR #168 (K-line MP15) just delivered a new toy to the MOW department. The crew is busy checking out the new piece of equipment that just arrived. The car will certainly help with the Fall "wheel slip" season rapidly approaching.

Hey Lee,

I always liked the bright colors of the DT&I.  I used to see their equipment in Lima on a regular basis.  Too bad Lionel didn't make more locos, like a GP7, in DT&I paint.

Boston & Maine Railroad #117 is an MTH Premier PS3 model of a General Electric 44-ton diesel-electric locomotive. It’s just the right size for my 10’-by-5’ model railroad which is just an oval with Atlas O-54 curves on which I run short trains at slow speeds.

#117 was the only GE 44-ton locomotive built for the Boston & Maine during World War II, entering service in August 1942. It was permitted to run at a maximum speed of 35 miles-per-hour and powered by two Caterpillar V8 engines of 180 horsepower each.

TALES OF THE DOCKSIDER

You asked for it - back by popular demand - it’s NYC shop switcher X-8688 and her plucky crew!

Today she is shunting a Spag’s TOFC to the team track.  Spag’s, located in Shrewsbury, MA, was one of the original discount department stores.

A “warehouse” store before the term was invented, it was a strictly a no frills operation located in an old garage.  Merchandise was displayed in shipping boxes; the empty boxes were left for shoppers to use for their purchases.  The store had narrow aisles, no shopping carts or bags and accepted cash only.  It was probably best known for a wide selection of tools and hardware.

The owner, Anthony “Spag” Borgatti, could be seen in the store wearing his signature cowboy hat and khaki work uniform (sometimes with his German Shepard too, well before Menards!).  He was a very well respected figure in the community, known for his philanthropy and generous treatment of his employees.

Your Yardmaster has a couple of particularly fond memories of Spag’s (sadly, now gone, unable to compete with the big box stores).  One was going every Spring with his Dad and brother to buy a new baseball glove for the coming season.  Best of all however, was seeing the stacks of orange and blue Lionel boxes right next to the fish and tackle counter.  Dad couldn’t afford to indulge his son in new trains often, but my entire small postwar collection came from Spag’s.

Quick story- a close friend runs O and standard. He had been eyeing a MTH gold standard gauge passenger set for a while. Well, his wife decided to buy it for him for their 50th.

Got you beat by 1 year, Bob!  Hopefully, they keep us for many more!

Nice 50th Anniversary story where the guy’s wife gave him that great gift (and not the other way around). It reminds me of the line from blazing saddles - “This is 1874. You'll be able to sue her!”

I know its not Saturday, but yesterday my family work just overwhelmed the schedule.  Wife and I are going on a 2 week vacation (finally!!) that Covid 19 shut down on three prior occasions, so wish me luck!!  So a day late, here are some switchers.

I waited to ask, as I didn't want to disrupt the flow of switcher posts/photos. Your Long Island flat car is pretty cool. In a previous post you mentioned doing decal work on a flat car. So is this a total scratch built car or a kitbash? Most traditional flat cars have rib details of some sort. The Industrial Rail flat car had flat sides: Much easier to decal with more placement options. K-Line also had a couple varieties of flat cars, one with flat sides which I know was used for a Illinois Central and Chessie bulk head flat with cable reels.

It looks to me - my guess - is that this is a kitbash of a former K-Line flat car, maybe with a busted mount for the truck. There's some sort of plate (?) between the truck and the car on the side opposite the brake wheel, clearly visible on one side of the car, but not the other.

As you might guess with my repaint thread, this sort of thing always piques my interest.
