North End of Cloverdale

Hardly any smoke from looks like a Y family locomotive.  Well maintained fire?

Also, we equate the N&W with coal hoppers, not tanks. Was this picture taken during WWII when there were many "unit" oil trains?

Yes,during WWII. Train is heading north up the Shenandoah Div. The train is about ten miles out of Roanoke at the north end of Cloverdale. This is a starting up a pretty steep grade and should have a lot of smoke seen, IF, the train was moving (which I doubt). There is a good chance that this photo was "staged" by the company with the train sitting still. As with most "company" photos, there was a lot of "touching up" done, hence, no smoke. If you look close enough, you can tell where the smoke was.

Interesting. You can see the “old school” photo editing of the smoke plume. Grif Teller comment d once that PRR management would never allow his calendar paintings to show billowing smoke. A thin wisp of steam was the most they’d agree to. Maybe with PRR then having major ownership in N&W, the aversion to visible smoke was shared. Great historic shots!
