You didn't do anything but make me hungry and wanting a beer!!!!!! : )

The Brewery should have been first! LOL That way the guys from the Sauerkraut factory, power plants, Fire Station and all the others would have a place to go after work! LOL

Sorry, Mike, respectfully disagree... the workers need an after-hours bar, not a brewery. Now if they only eat beer boiled Brats, you may be on to something

Well there'd be no beer to drink in the bar w/o a BREWERY to supply the suds so logic dictates that the BREWERY must come first.  On the other hand if the BREWERY had a bar there'd never be a shortage of beer.

Nice try, Nick, but that’s not a brewery... it is definitely one of those new-fangled Foo-Foo micro-breweries

The difference between "cleaver" advertising and aggravating advertising is a fine line -- I think this is about there!!

I think one week and maybe two weeks of hints before the reveal date is plenty of time for everyone to have fun guessing.  Beyond that it becomes really aggravating.  I will say; however, Menards doesn't put a product on the market until they have it in their inventory ready to ship.

Shop the Pig: Piggly Wiggly Store from Menards (279-4426) Click to see more!

Dimensions: 14”W x 6-1/2”D x 5-1/2”H

279-4426

The basics: The O gauge Piggly Wiggly grocery store reproduces an icon familiar in small towns in the south and Midwest. The structure’s base measures 14" wide by 6-1/2" deep and features a front sidewalk and decorated interior. There is illumination from the front overhang, and the storefront sign has a steadily illuminated round pig icon. The chase lighting sequentially illuminates each letter and then flashes Piggly Wiggly. There are customers and carts inside the store and shoppers outside.

Why you need this: Founded in 1916, Piggly Wiggly was the first self-service grocery store in the United States. Rather than have clerks taking items off a shelf for a customer, the customer could make their own brand selections and take his/her own basket to the checkout. The iconic cap-wearing pig image is familiar in towns large and small, and there are currently 530 Piggly Wiggly stores in 17 states.

The building design is timeless, fitting in from the 1940s through today. It is a standard shoebox design with a narrow overhanging marquee with the store’s iconic pig clerk, and an illuminated store name.

The windows and doors have trim simulating aluminum framing. The exterior has brick texture and the bricks are a cream color. On the ends are signage for Piggly Wiggly and there are vintage advertisements for Tide Soap and Campbell’s Soup. The rear of the store has an employee door and two loading docks for truck deliveries.

The store interior has printed walls with an extensive fruit and vegetable section. There is a free-standing fruit counter on the left side of the store, and a segment with cereal and soft drinks near the front window in the right side. Inside there are three shoppers with carts two standing near the fruit stand, and one by the soft drinks. A kiosk is by the front door with an employee ready to assist shoppers.

Out front are two pedestrians, two gents engaged in a conversation, and a fifth figure paused in front of the blue mailbox. You’ll also discover a mechanical pony ride and, of course, Jack the German shepherd, on the scene.

The electric signage looks great. It highlights each letter of the store’s name in sequence, and then flashes the name with all letters illuminated. The bright red letters are impressive in bright or dark room lighting.

This is an attractive store that will give Red Owl a run for its money for the hard fought battle for selling groceries in your train city.

Power requirement: For illumination, the store requires a Menards 4.5 volt power supply, Menards SKU# 279-4061, 279-4062, or 279-4050 sold separately.

The 9-Piece Plug & Play Accessory Pack (279-4681) includes one four-way line splitter, one 5-foot, one 4-foot, and one 3-foot extension section. The three Y-splitters can power up to six vehicles. Have some old buildings you’d like to illuminate? The set includes two four-inch LED tape lights that can provide additional spot lighting wherever you need it. The accessory pack can do a lot!

The 8-Piece Plug & Play Accessory Pack (279-4035) includes two 6-foot extensions (straight plug head), two 6-foot extensions (90-degree plug head), two male to female conversion pieces and two Y-splitters.

COOL!!!   I will be getting one!  My US power makes a BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE noise all the time.    I hope this one does not!  I really like Menards buildings and rolling stock!  Lets have some more variety of Southern Railway stuff!! : )

Jim

Jim, if you do a search, there is a thread about the building making noise!

I have the Red Owl store, which I really enjoy!   I like this PigglyWiggly as well (when I was a kid in Fargo, ND, the Red Owl was our store within walking distance, the Pig was farther along, which my mother would occasionally drive the car to shop at.

So I like the PigglyWiggly, but it doesn't look deep enough.   I wonder if Menards could make a back-store without the store front, that butts-up to this store, to make a deeper overall store.   Less expense without a store front for the attachment.   Optional, one of the delivery doors could be rolled-up, showing product in cardboard boxes on carts, and one of the unloading-roller-tracks (correct name for this?) and a worker inside a lighted space.   One could back up a truck to the door for a great scene!   Well, just an idea, but could be done fairly easily: Menard's, please give this some consideration.

Cabinet Bob, you need to get a section of straight track in that curve so a quick stop would allow off loading from train right into roll up doors on the back of the Pig.  Either that or a turn-out and siding for rail deliveries.

Oh by the way I think Menard's came up with another winner.  Iconic brand in a reasonable footprint.  Gotta go to the website to see the lights in action.

Hi M-Guy's, a very good layout selection by Menards. Touches my time frame on the nose. THE PIG is still very much alive in the South. Especially in SC. The PIG took some hits when a few major chains moved in close by.  They responded well and quickly, remodeled older stores in small rural areas, and changed their merchandising plan. They have a good game plan now.  Yes, I shall be ordering.

My best regards to THE PIG management.

Tommy

Mark the Menards Guy.  For those of us who live nowhere near a Menards, these 11% rebates are a joke, since they are not usable for on-line sales.  Why can't they also be applicable to on-line sales, since you do charge well for shipping & handling, which probably more than offsets the cost Menards would incur in shipping these to a store and stocking for off-the-shelf sale.

RJR

AWESOME!!!! Thank you for the reveal!!! I live in Sheboygan WI and we have a bunch of of Piggly Wiggly stores throughout the county and a large Piggly Wiggly warehouse!!! I have been planning to build a Piggly Wiggly supermarket for a while -- now it's here for me!! Also you can get the 11% off of on line sales. I do it all the time.

Pretty clear to me that they are not redeemable except physically at a store. I have ordered a lot more from Menards, both train and non-train, were it otherwise.  I quote from the Menards acknowledgement email:

"Please note: Rebates are provided in the form of a Menards® Merchandise Credit Check valid towards purchases at any Menards® retail store. Not valid for purchases on MENARDS.COM®. By submitting this rebate form, you agree to resolve any disputes related to rebate redemption by binding arbitration and you waive any right to file or participate in a class action. Terms and conditions available at www.rebateinternational.com®"

I certainly don't intend to blast Menard's.  Their prices are excellent and what we have bought from them has always been good quality.  When Mrs. RJR & I drive over to Kansas to visit our son & his family, we always stop by their stores and leave "a few+" dollars.  But I see nothing wrong in pointing out to Menards a fact that tends to reduce their sales.

I did order a PigglyWiggly, and have bought other structures and RR cars in the past, but would have bought more if the 11% savings had been effective.

All these neat items Menards keep churning out!!  Wish I had the layout real estate to get and display these.  Menards just goes and does the items while MTH and Lionel think about it, do market research, wait for pre orders etc then decide yeah maybe we ought to work up drawings and release this in 2022.

Well Piggly Wiggled onto my layout today.  Very nice, and the sign action makes it stand out.  As was pointed out above, there are no check-out stands. What is ironic is that according to Wikipedia, P-W was the first grocery store to have check-outs and grocery carts.  Like Grandpa's House, built very solid.

Mark:

Menards needs to correct their packaging.  This photo shows the bottom of the package shredded that the Piggly Wiggly came in.   The Piggly Wiggly is fine and unbroken.  My American Materials Plant #2 arrived with many of the parts loose in the box that I had to reattach.  The American Materials Plant arrived with a crack in one wing of the base that I had to glue.  All the outer shipping cartons showed no damage.

The lighting load of the PW must be considerable.  I tested it with a 1.4 amp output wallwart, and the inside lights dimmed when the sign flashed.  I don't use the Menards wart because I don't want 120 volts running around my layout.  I'll be using AC/DC buck converters hooked to my 18-volt accessory feed and outputting 4.3 volts.

Menards ought to have such as alternate power sources.

Dewman51 posted:

Guys-- you misunderstand my question. My lights are fine -- I would like them not to be on chase mode but steady on.

Thinking not as the description has no mention of options. "The electric signage looks great. It highlights each letter of the store’s name in sequence, and then flashes the name with all letters illuminated."

As opposed to this from the maintenance shed: "A 2-3/8" x 1-3/4" lighted "The Milwaukee Road" sign that features several different patterns of lighting effects that you control with a switch."

Though you may be able to modify or replace the controller.

New Menards Buildings Available in California!

A little background:

Per California’s “Proposition 65” law, items sold in the state of California must be labeled with a specific warning that adheres to the “Proposition 65” guidelines. Selling a single item without this warning label would result in a fine of $2,500 per item. Obviously, the risk was too high to continue to sell in California. These are after all, unique one-off, limited edition, hand-crafted buildings.

The whole situation is pretty unfortunate but we are now labeling and testing our new items as they are produced. And, in case you haven’t noticed our five newest buildings are now available for sale in California!

  1. Gamer & Thrones
  2. Piggly Wiggly
  3. American Materials Plant #2
  4. County Inn Hotel
  5. Sprecher Brewery

Still bummed you can’t get all of our buildings in California? Luckily, there are tons of resellers on "the bay" (or even on this forum) who will sell our buildings directly to you!

As an aside: While investigating this, it struck me that buying our buildings and reselling on “the bay” sure looks like a great business to me. Some of our current buildings are selling for upwards of 2.5 times the value and our out-of-production buildings are going for 3 times the value! For example, The Vetter Sash & Door (which is still in stock on Menards.com) is selling for $250 (plus $35 shipping) and the American Power & Light (out of production) is selling for $279 (plus $29.98 shipping).

Those return are better than the stock market!

Have a great day!

Cool! Well done Menards!

Mark, I'm curious, does California require the testing? Or is Menards going above and beyond the labeling requirement?

I can understand it if they're reselling a sold-out item, but if they're inflating the price of an in-stock item, then they are trying to take advantage of someone's unfamiliarity with the market. It may be the way the world is, but still it is unkind and disreputable. And of course, the buyer isn't protected by Menards' great customer service. Hopefully those items don't sell.

It's been said before, but well done Menards for providing affordable, good-looking, fun train products. Keep up the good work!

I've seen books on the "bay" for twice list price that are still available new with a normal discount.
