After a normal run session and shut down with my TMCC Command Control N&W 1218, the next start up to run, (starting in forward) the tender frequently uncouples from the rest of the consist. I have tried several different sequences of shut down and start up, to no avail. Of course, I can start in reverse and then switch to forward, but am I doing something wrong?

Nope, Many of Lionel locomotives had issues with the couplers opening when the power is applied. I cannot specifically say what mechanically is going on in the electronics and which item they lacked or failed... capacitor, inductor, diode... etc.
But from what I recall this was a board issue?
A 1uf 50V bi-polar capacitor across the coupler connector will frequently solve these issues. The fact that this happens on a power transition indicates it's an electrical noise issue.
Note that this is ONLY for TMCC and the early Legacy with the modular boards. If you have issues with later Legacy with the RCMC electronics, do NOT put caps across them.
