So, how did the test run with NKP 765 go today? Any reports? Any photos/video?

Test run went very well, Jack. The overhauled throttle is a dream. I can move it anywhere on the quadrant now with one hand, not two hands plus a foot against the backhead for leverage!
We had a gasket on the cold water pump spring a small leak and that was about it.
There were some people out shooting video today, but all we had was the tool car and two box cars, so it wasn't much to see.
We're all set for a very busy 2015, starting next weekend out of Fort Wayne.
Also the trips on the CVSR in late Sept & early Oct. As for the Youngstown Trips, that's going to be cool.

That guy did cut it close. Gates dropped at 52 seconds. As for the whistle, I guess the driver could have been deaf....
BTW, the whistle sounds great!
765 has a very nice sounding whistle and I bet could be heard for miles.Can you think that there was a time.Whistle like this could be heard any time.A freight train passing by a small town.Or if you were lucky and your town had 2 railroads going through it.Some times I can not help but feel I missed out.

not much to see..after finally getting to see 765 in action a couple years ago heading into Conway, and later going thru Columbiana....there's a lot to see! magnificent locomotive!

All fun aside. Close yes and if 765 was going 60MPH the gates would have been down already, then he would be a moron. He must have herd the whistle because he did slow down be for he crossed. The lights didn't start flashing until right after he crossed the tracks.
On another note. I was thrilled to see 611 running, but every time I see 765 running and hear its whistle. Well it just brings out the kid in me.
Im not getting into a ****ing contest with anyone but lights flashing at 47 seconds whistle blowing off the chart. Gates dropped at 52. Either way If I approach a crossing and hear a strong whistle you stop. Lights or no lights gate or no gate, they could malfunction. Not a smart driver; maybe next time we will all be saying how terrible it was he died.
Not to take away from the video itself; 765 is a gem of a locomotive. The folks at fort Wayne have taken extreme care with her over the years. For many years there was nothing going. Now we have the prospect of seeing 765, 611, 1309, 4014, 2100 and a few others back on the road. Forgive me if I left a few out. its an exciting time for steam locomotive fans seeing some of them back to running. Now if Altoona would get the "starter kit" for 1361 back in order and actually put her back together.... Ya Ya I know wishfull thinking..
Just above all folks, dont matter if steam or diesel. Dont sit on the train tracks, and when you approach a crossing always always as the saying goes stop, look and listen.
Finally watched it over and over, and eventually I did see the gate arm come down, after the driver passed the flashing red lights. He should have received a ticket (I believe it is a $500 fine in our town) for "running a red light". I always stop for the reds, no matter whether the care arm has dropped or not. The train speed through our town on BNSF is 79 MPH, nothing to fool around with. Many deaths on METRA in the Chicago suburban area.
Rich, has 765's throttle been like that for a long time? I remember seeing a cab video from (I think) Owosso 2009 where you were using both hands and it seemed a little hard to pull. I just assumed that's the way it was supposed to be. Nine of us will be on the Lafayette trip Saturday. I was just wondering who will be our engineer(s) and firemen for the trip.
The throttle has had that "bump" in it for as long as I can remember. It's nice to have it back to blueprint specs.
On Saturday I will be your engineer from Fort Wayne to LaFayette and back east as far as Peru. Steve Winicker will be firing. Our second shift crew comes on duty in Peru on the return trip. Your engineer then will be Zach Hall and your fireman will be Jerrad Bennett.
Will we be making a stop in Peru on the way down to change Road Foreman and/or Train Masters?
We will stop in Peru each way. Peru is a Division Point. It is the western terminus of the Lake Division, and the eastern terminus of the Illinois Division. Therefore it is a Norfolk Southern crew change point.
A Lake Division crew handles the train between Fort Wayne and Peru, while an Illinois Division crew handles things between Peru and Lafayette.
Thanks, Rich. Confirms what I had heard. Looks like it might be a scorcher this weekend... high of 90 on Saturday, 89 Sunday.
