Some of you may have read some of my previous posts of the problems I had purchasing a Harry Potter Hogwarts Lionchief Bluetooth set off of eBay. If not, here is a brief recap. Back in January I bid on a Hogwarts Bluetooth set on eBay. Seller said only used once. I won the bid and was shipped the set. The seller did not pack it very well and it got banged around. When I Tried to run it it puffed smoke but not from the smokestack. I went back and forth with seller until eBay stepped in and I got a partial refund. Being mechanically inclined and a profesional electronics tech I decided to attempt to fix it.. The Circuit board is just mounted in a plastic housing with out screws, it just snaps in place. So in shipping it popped out and rested against the metal body, so when I applied power Poof a volcano erupted on one of the chips. 20180311_193344

I re-seated the board and tested the loco again, Power up, OK. No Smoke! Remote on, does it connect? Yes! Sounds ? Bell, Whistle both work. Voices? I hear Hagrid's (Robbie Coltrane) Voice. Harry's Voice and Ron Weasley's voice. Good so far. Now for the Locomotion part. Turned the knob for forward motion, Nothing. No forward motion. But it does go in reverse? Turn the knob for reverse, it goes in reverse. lets try Bluetooth.  The app syncs up, and all of the same results.

The circuit board is $45 from Lionel but when you order it you do have to call  Lionel and explain why you are buying it as it a new enough part and proprietary so they want to know what happened. I had my LHS order it for me as they  deal with Lionel's parts and it would be expedient for me rather than having to call and wait and then convince Lionel that The board was genuinely bad

Hey Lionel!  May I make a suggestion? Make the board a tiny bit bigger and use nylon bolt and nut to secure it firmly to its mount so the board won't pop lose during shipping.

As I said my LHS was kind enough to order it for me with no mark up and I received the part yesterday. Hooray! I will have Harry Potter and his friends on their way to Hogwarts in No Time at least that is what I thought.

I installed the board yesterday afternoon it took an hour to install as I was very careful. I placed the loco on the track and went through the same tests., Power up, OK. No Smoke! Remote on does it connect, Yes! Sounds ? Bell, Whistle both work. Voices? I hear Hagrid's (Robbie Coltrane) Voice. Harry's Voice and Ron Weasley's voice. Good so far. Now for the Locomotion part. Turned the knob for forward motion, forward motion YES! But it does go in reverse? Turn the knob for reverse, it goes in reverse. lets try Bluetooth. The app syncs up, and all of the same results. I run the train for about a half hour. Those of you with LC remotes know that the take off is not very smooth, so I switched to the Bluetooth app, that when things went south. I was playing around with the speed control when the Locomotive stopped.  What Oh No is the board? I cycle the power off let it sit a few minutes powered on , nope no locomotion.  I took the body off and checked connections all looked good. I placed the Loco  sans body on the track and observed that the motor was making a slight hum when I turned the remote knob to forward and reverse. I was thinking the motor was stuck so I the knob  in the to forward position then turned the flywheel.  I felt  felt resistance from the motor once I overcame the resistance off she went. I checked speed control and it was working but when I stopped it to try reverse nothing but a slight hum, Turn the flywheel and it goes. Diagnosis? Bad Motor. SO, the motor is under $20 my labor is cheap.... Stay Tuned

I installed a new motor, interesting enough the motor for a non LC Harry Potter loco is the same for one that is a LC with bluetooth. The replacement motor has a capacitor across both leads going to the motor. When I installed it matching the colors of the wires. It ran backwards so I reversed the leads and it runs great. Harry , Ron and Herminie take a ride.
