I just picked up this book today at the NYC Transit Museum store at Grand Central Station. 372 pages of terrific photos of Manhattan El lines, plus route maps, details of signals, and an extensive roster of cars. I don't model els, but I love NYC and the hundreds of photos in this book are wonderful images of NYC in the 19th and 20th century. And if you DO model els, I don't know how you can be without this book.

That book and Lothar Stelter's "Third Avenue El" are my two favorite elevated railway books.
And of course the seminal "3rd Avenue El" video
I like this video:

My grandparents lived a block from the 183rd street 3rd Avenue El station which has since been demolished along with the 3rd ave subway line.

I was born 10 years too late to be able to appreciate the remaining Manhattan els, but thanks to my dad I did get to ride the last Brooklyn el, the Myrtle Avenue.
That ERA book is wonderful. There is a follow up book put out by the same group called “The Elevated Railways of Brooklyn and the BMT Subway”. It is also quite good. An older book to look out for by Robert C Reed is “The New York Elevated”.
Thanks for the information! I was in the Transit Store last week and was looking at the books available...some are sealed so its hard to know what its like inside...I will pick one up.

Oh, boy. Another book order just placed! 😁
As a member of the Electric Railroaders Association I have not seen or heard of any mention recently of a second book about the BMT elevated and subway lines in Brooklyn. They must be still working on it. We will be notified when it is ready for sale. There is a revised edition of the first book however. I have both of them.
