Not a layout shot but here's a short video made recently of three Legacy diesels running on my layout.   A newer SD40-2, out front, a 3 year old GP-35 midway running as a pusher and a 8 year old GP30 in reverse bringing up the rear.  I shortened the train to shorten the video  .. A testament to Legacy control as the train never derailed, Eight years span engine age and they actually ran smooth as silk all in sinc.....

My other layout.....the River City 3 Railers Modular pike...this pic is IMG_4753IMG_4757IMG_4758IMG_4761IMG_4768IMG_4769IMG_4771IMG_4781IMG_4796IMG_4797IMG_4799IMG_4801IMG_4813IMG_4828IMG_4830IMG_4835

The 21X34 large HiRail layout and the 6X11 small venue traditional pike.

By Thanksgiving we'll be 21X38 with another module to pair with our new bridgre module.

My 11' X 14' layout is still a work in progress; slowly getting some "scenery" in place. Table height is 48" with a duck-under along the long side. Basically a running loop with passing sidings + a loop for my "S" gauge items to strut their stuff... Maximum 0-99 on the outer loop, minimum 0-72 on the inner passing siding.IMG_1129IMG_1130

Beautiful layouts guys....we are already seeing some folks stating that they appreciate the pictures!!  These pictures show all the ways that one can enjoy our trains.  It doesn't matter if you have a "carpet central" or a basement empire!!  Lets make a point of helping others through our pictures...remember the saying "pictures speak a thousand words"!!

Thanks,

TONKANUT...That layout is super awesome!!!  So many of you are blessed to live in a part of this great land where basements are the norm.  I greatly envy all of you will a basement.  It is also clear that many of you are what I would call "master builders."  It is with great awe that I marvel over the photos of your layouts...a big pat on the back to you all.

These are from my recently dismantled 6x9 layout. We moved about a month ago so I haven had a layout for about 6 weeks and it will be a few months before I can start on a new one.

Thanks. Nice to see what can be done with what is probably the average size layout. Inspiration to finish my granddaughters instead of working on my own everyday.

Every one of the layouts posted are wonderful and very inspiring.  I continue to get great ideas and wonderful information every time that I visit our OGR Forums.

I have attached a .pdf file showing my permanent Christmas layout (which still needs to have backgrounds added) and a few progress photo of my currently in-work 5X10 layout that will be based on 1957 America.  Country Joe's 6X9 layout really shows the benefit of the additional one foot in layout width.  I was limited to the 5 foot width to maintain access to my completed corner Christmas layout.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their layout photos.

MY LAYOUTHey OGR Members, I'm not ready to introduce my layout to the Forum as of yet, but this post is definitely inspirational and if I could throw in a photo to provide additional incentive to someone, I hope my layout in it's embryo stage, (12'x30') will help.  i'm hoping there are more contributions, I could use the ideas.

Never suspected when I retired I'd have sooooo much fun  pursuing  this hobby.  Much to do, but  here's current state of my 7x15  layout. I hope  to  make room to add either a turntable (preferred) or a transfer table to the industrial side of the layout by expanding  2.5'  more...three if I loose weight!   Also planning an upper level, anchored on two sides  with  and elevated track connecting them....phew, I'm tired just  typing all that I intend to do. Thanks for looking.

Back in March of last year I had a resurgence in room construction enthusiasm and took up where I had left off in 2007.  Most of the initial work involved accessing the basic attic by building new stairs, starting in the basement.  With the preliminaries over, here's a shot of what I began with 18 months ago.

.and the first train running in the room.

At the golden spike ceremony, Feb '16.......

.......and basically, where it's at today.

Once your layout is "done" you can concentrate on the details. I cut some doors in a tired FM diesel and fabricated an engine component to simulate a major overhaul in the engine service facility. Adding figures and both interior and exterior lighting enhance the scene.

I wish my layout was as cleaned up as most are here. Been working on mine for about 12 years off and on. More off then on till recently. So here are some pics of work so far along with boxes and things all over the layout. But at least I can run four trains when I work on the layout. Here are some pics from today.............Paul

Everyone's contribution is great!  I do want to make special comment to RickO and Paul 2.

Rick, I like the winter snowy area you have along with a summer area.  I think it works good.

Paul, I have noticed your second shelf before in photos.  I think it and the transition areas work.

I have been thinking for about a year or combining the two ideas on my layout I hope to start this winter.  I would have two levels, both on shelves like Paul.  The upper shelf would have a winter area where I could put some of my wife's porcelain and ceramic buildings on display year round.  The lower level would all be summer with scale buildings and one area of a few operating accessories.  I'll see how I can cram that into an 11 x 11 room.

Your contributions enables me to better visualize that.  I think that was the kind of thing Alan was hoping for when he started this topic.

Thank you, all!!

Getting the trains running is only the first step in creating an enjoyable layout.  Adding scenery takes it to the next step.  By adding figures, vehicles and structures you begin to tell a story.  These little scenes, or vignettes, are what bring layouts to life.  There was a thread a while back sharing vignettes on our layouts.  This is a very good thread to reference for ideas.

Here are a few vignettes from my layout.  No captions.  You can create your own story.

Not starting a layout because you are afraid you might have to move? Maybe I can encourage you with mine. This L-shaped, 9' 6" x 8' 1" layout is designed to fit in an average sized spare room, though it's in a basement right now. It comes apart in six sections, and I've already had to move it once, so I know it can be done! The odd-looking benchwork permits me two lower levels for on layout storage of 5 trains total. Sorry for the grainy pics. The light in the basement is not great. Good news is, if I decide to upgrade it, I can just move the layout out of the way

Another enjoyable facet of this hobby is operation.  Sometimes it is fun to just let the trains go around the layout, unattended.  Other times it is enjoyable to run the trains with a purpose.  I enjoy making up trains and sending them out to switch local industries.  To make things even more interesting, I will sometimes have a train running on the main line while I perform switching moves on the industrial branch.

Here is a video of a typical switching operation on my layout.  Pay no attention to the man in the window!

What products & techniques did you use to make the snow?  I'm planning a winter layout set in SE Ohio and that's pretty much the look I'm going for.  Thanks.

I am pretty sure, I know how he did that and what he used..   Its nice to see what I was visualizing for the new layout.  Snow covered roads are a must for a winter themed layouts, along with drifts and ruts in the road. I would say this is spring where things have started to turn green. defiantly well done.,

Good morning Fridge, I was away from he computer so sorry for the delay in the reply.

Most of the items are Woodland Scenic Products.

Flex Paste was used for the piled up snow along the side of the road.

Realistic water was poured into a cup and then brushed onto the road surface to look like ice.

Water effects is used to make the ice hanging from the guard rail cables, (Not sure how well you can see this from the photos)

In another area not shown here I painted the road an off white and then put the realistic water on and the outcome looks like packed snow.

The lower bush's are just pillow stuffing pulled apart and spray painted ( Dollar Store Spray Paint) with different colors, dark green brown, and some dark burgundy and then sprinkled with fine foliage again from woodland scenics and then sprayed with cheap hairspray. The short saplings are just trees branch from outside.

If you go on Woodland Scenics web site they have a presentation on making winter scenery.

Thank you everyone for the comments and encouragement !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to Fridge for asking the question!

Mark, I think we talked a bit about the winter effects a bit when I was over, but not to a large extent.  Thank you for the references to the products.  Heidi is getting married this Saturday.  She has just about everything packed up from her art studio, and they have moved a lot of it and the shelf units and some bigger items over to her fiancé's house; her house too come Saturday.  Once the tables and desk are out, I will have the 11' 4" x 11' 6" room to start planning my layout.  Enough was out yesterday for me to get in and get measurements for the first time.

I say this to everyone to say that I want to put a snow scene on the upper level and moves some of Kim's buildings there for a more permanent winter application.

This is a great thread with so many great layout pictures.

My home layout is still in the design stage but getting close. Hope to "break ground" in the spring.

Here are some pictures of the club layout (NLOE) some of which I have posted before but I guess the objective is to get them all in one place.

I'll start with bridges, trestles and tunnels.

Thanks!  Is the snow on top of the foliage also spray paint, then?

Fridge, no this is also Woodland Scenic snow that comes in a plastic shaker container.

After I sprayed the hair spray on the foliage I sprinkled the snow on next before the hair spray dried.

I have also used the real fine snow that some craft stores sell also. I did not have of this type of snow on hand so I used the Woodland Scenic product on this hillside.

Sorry for leaving this step out.

John,

I agree with Alan; I love your layout!  A little philosophizing here, but I think each layout is special in its own way!  Some are simpler in either track plan or scenery, but they serve their purpose to the builder as much as the most complicated and artistic layout.  I learned a lot from you going through how you built that great rock wall, for instance!!

Jealous of your permanent layouts!

I set up Christmas layouts and leave them up usually Nov - Feb (thank you to my wife for the generous timeline).  It became a full time hobby just planning for the following year.  That was a lot of fun in itself

Marvins original name was commander of the X-2 flying saucer. A rocket in later shows was the Martian Maggot. I refer to this one as the Martian War Bonnet which makes perfect sense seeing how Marvin is an ant it the god of wars uniform. Ive seen a few other ships too. I think X-1 is the Supreme Commanders so X-X (Roman numerals, lol) and X- 0.5 for the FRED saucer is what Ill likely use for flight numbers.

Two down, three to go, plus an unfinished mini layout.

Ha ha!! I love it!  Very good!

The Blueboard Central Division of American Flyer Lines was originally intended to be a way to run some of the trains in my collection.  It started out as some 2" blueboard insulation placed on the support table for an old HO railroad from my high school days.  This is about 2009.

Notice the duck under.

Crawling through on my hands and knees every time I wanted to get to the other side of the layout got tedious after a while.  I decided to negotiate for a bit more space in the basement and the Blueboard Central made a major expansion to save wear and tear on the body.

At this point I should have made plans to make the layout more permanent, but It was just so much fun to keep adding things to the surface that in reality it is just a very large temporary layout.  Blue insulation board, Fastrack laying on top of that some other surfaces represented by vinyl and felt, some period buildings and buildings from Menards and other manufacturers, have been added over the years.

In 2013 I got ambitious and ran wires to the street lights.

This is pretty much what it looks like today.

There are no switches, just two independent loops; a folded dog bone and an oval.  Prewar American Flyer Trains do not like Fastrack switches.  Its pretty much plunk things down where I think they will look good and "play trains".  I have a great time playing too.

Alex, love what you have done with the upper level. Great work!

Hi John, sorry i just saw this. I thank you very much, i was able to get this far from all the help you gave me when we first started. I still want to come and see your club layout, if i can ever get some free time

Thanks again, Alex

Now this is to me is what I would like to emulate... not so much the scene but to in "incite" drama as one views the layout as they walk  down the basement steps... this does it...  you cannot help but stop and look and say wow!

We work with such little space and to create a view that makes your jaw drop is what I am trying to aim for...

Thanks Tonkanut...

I am working on another portion of the layout and after looking at the store bought buildings assembled into block squares... I got bored.... I am ripping it all out to create a larger WOW factor... stay tuned...

Thanks for the post guys... and I really am enjoying the layout pics.

I use a fog machine to add a nice early morning effect on my layout.

That clanging sound you just heard off in the distance to the West was my jaw hitting the floor.

Amazing!

Pictures do not do TJ's layout justice.  His layout has to be experienced, not seen.  It is almost sensory overload.  Not only do you see the beautiful layout, but you also are exposed to the environmental extras such as sound, lighting effects, smells and temperature changes, among other things.  I had the privilege of visiting his layout a couple of years ago.  The memories are etched in my mind forever.

I have to say, the level of each layout shown, the detail and quality say much about the great fellow O Gaugers on the Forum.  Mine is still in the early construction phase, has been on hold for too long, due to priorities.  But, we all know how that is, and always look forward to completion..... as if it ever does arrive........    Congrats to all in this post, really displays the talent and ingenuity of all, and best thing is.... THE TRAINS !!!!!!!

Well, you did say in all and any stage of completion...... thanks for all the inspiration shown by everyone100_1518100_1528100_1525100_1522100_5900100_5901100_5905.

This has been a really fun post to watch grow. I love all the variety. The ability to do whatever you want is what makes 3 rail so appealing. This is my current 11 x19 crappy basement layout. Its more of an experiment in space and operations than a permanent layout, in fact its currently completely disassembled as of last weekend (I'm putting adult size legs on it). Its semi modular in that its made from 3x8 segments some made from my original 4x8 I had as a wee lad (hence the short legs). I've never had a layout that I could "operate" other than to back into a few spur sidings. I've also never had an around the walls layout. The track plan is mostly copied from the "Quick Start" chapter of Tony Koesters's operations book. I've been having a really good time tinkering with it, but am looking forward to finalizing a more interesting track plan and getting the legs back on it so I can do some scenery, its been bare wood since I took off the grass mat when I was 13 or so. Sorry for the low quality pics my 2 tube fluorescent fixture competing with a single incandescent bulb isn't exactly good lighting! I think overall its non-photogenic proof it doesn't take much to have a great time in this hobby.
