I'm partial to the short-lived original (1973ish) MPC electronic whistle. It has a far-off, plaintive sound. I also find it charming that, even though it is electronic, you have to hold the button down a couple seconds to let it "spin up". It's like they were trying to reproduce the feel of the old motor-driven air whistles.

I think OP might have meant how would you describe the whistles on your trains, like "would you say that your whistles are ..." high or low pitched etc.  Just a guess.

I do mostly all PRR, so mine are mainly the PRR banshee (good examples I have are the Visionline CC2, the Legacy B6sb, and the MTH PS3 L2s Mikado), and the PRR 3 chime (a good example I have is the MTH PS2 Q2).

I have become annoyed by the Legacy K4 and PRR J1 whistles, which I suppose are meant to be PRR 3 chimers.  I liked them when I first got them, but now they wear on my nerves!  I'm sure my taste for them will come back around though.

I guess I started this mess by having the correct whistles digitized for the RoW locomotives.  It was fun to go out and do live recordings.  There are people that do have whistle collections.  There is a minor difference in the sound depending on whether steam or compressed air is used.  I learned a lot from the gentleman who designed the whistle for the Royal Hudson.  He explained that steam gave the whistle sound "bite".  And that a whistle is not a sinusoid but a trumpet like sound more like a semi circle wave.  Steam, being hot, changes the dimensions of the whistle as it heats up.  And thus the pitch.

The Royal Hudson is an A minor 7th and so are the current diesel K5LA horns.

More than you all wanted to know.
