I have always run my layouts conventionally, but I will be putting together a small (4 x6 or 4 x8) layout using K-line snaptrack. I'd like to run my 2 Protosounds 3.0 engines on this layout. I am thinking of getting an MTH DCS system for it so that I don't have to wire blocks. I will be using an MTH z-1000 transformer. I have some questions.

1. Which MTH DCS pieces will I need to purchase?

2. Can power from the DCS just be sent to the locos and not to the track (My kids CNJ Lionchief set seems to work like that.)?

3. See #2. Can I use a second transformer to power the track to operate the turnouts (K-Line and Lionel switches)and a few accessories like the Lionel track gang ?

4. I also have some Protosound 1.0 and 2.0 locos that I might like to occasionally run on this layout. Can they work on DCS?

5. Finally, how easy or hard is it to set up DCS and use it?

Thanks so much for any answers.

1.  See Operator's Manual

50-1001 DCS Remote Control Set includes the TIU and Remote

OR

Rev L TIU (with USB socket), DCS WiFi Interface Unit  and   free smart phone app

Every TIU OUTPUT needs circuit protection.

2.  No, the DCS signal is sent through the track to and from the engine via the TIU.  The Lion Chief set can run on the same track with the DCS trains with the 18volt fixed voltage to the track.

3.  Yes.  All transformers on a layout should be phased.

4.  Yes, on the Variable Voltage outputs.

5.  Check out the Quick Start Guides and decide for yourself.

If all you need to run is two engines and you are not looking into controlling any other layout functions (Switches & Accessories), I'd also look at a DCS Explorer (MTH 50-1035). It can run up to three PS2 and/or PS3 engines at the same time and provide basic train control.  It will work perfectly with your Z1000 power brick and it would cost less than a WIU & TIU combination.
