My grand daughter loves Thomas the Tank engine. With adult supervision at all times I knew she would be able to operate the controller and run Thomas the tank engine. So I purchased the Lionel set with two cars for her. She was very excited and did a good job operating it within the first 15 minutes. My thoughts are, she operates a ipad playing games why not start them early running trains.

When I got my son one a few years ago, I would let him run it himself. Even with CW-80 it would run full throttle and not derail.
A very cute picture. Last Christmas my 2.5 year old grandson figured out the remote without any help but could not master putting derailed cars back on the track. So I quickly switched to a CW-80 set to just a bit over bare minimum it would run on to limit speed. That way I could just watch from the comfort of a chair rather than have to sit on the floor to re-rail trains every couple of minutes.

Using a transformer to lower the running voltage is an excellent idea for little ones with quick fingers.
