I have been using Wago 222 series lever nut connectors on my layout, and a small club layout for a Thanksgiving weekend train show in Medford, Oregon. I am sure they are more expensive than your three way butt connector, but I like the fact that you can use from 28 gauge up to 12 gauge wires. I use 12 gauge for main power distribution, with 14 or 16 gauge for drops from main to track. They are reusable because of their lever design - though I am sure there is a limit on the number of reuses. I buy on Amazon. Comes in three flavors - two contacts, three contacts, or (shown) five contacts.

Definitely explore the Wago website, they have many different configurations of connectors. The Bay has them too, but be careful of counterfeits.
