Tips on deep cleaning postwar trucks/axles/wheels? | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for ideas on how to deep clean some postwar rolling stock axles and wheels. You know, the 75 year old ones that you oil and roll great but after a few days they are all gummed up again. What's the best way to tackle this. I'd love to just throw them in a cheap ultrasonic but something tells me that is probably too harsh for these old toys. Besides toothpicks and Qtips what can you all recommend?

Mineral spirits and a paint brush work great. I prefer the "odorless" mineral spirits although they still have a slight odor. If you can disassemble them enough to submerge you can leave them soak.

I use a brass wire wheel with my dremel. Wear eye protection.
