Can both the TMCC Cab1 and base as well as the Legacy Cab1L and base both be hooked up to a layout and be used at the same time to run trains or do I need a Legacy Cab2 and base to be able to use my TMCC Cab1 to run the layout. From what I have read, the CAB 1 and base and CAB1L and base cannot be used together?

So since I haven't seen this done before with a Base 1L and TMCC base, does this actually work?

The manual for the Base 1L doesn't have any information on connecting a Base 1L and TMCC base together.  I'd certainly like to learn something.  Obviously I do know you can connect a Legacy base and TMCC base using the cable listed above.

Gary,

Thanks for the response. I have three Legacy diesels with the rest all being TMCC. I'm not interested in all the "features" of Legacy but I do understand that Legacy runs TMCC equipment better and that is what I am looking for at a lesser price.

Your a good friend but personally I think your nuts.  The Legacy features you would be missing out on are awesome.   To be missing out on them is crazy.  Spend the money and get the full Legacy. Trust me you will be blown away.

"Crazy, Nuts" nice terms to call a friend. Smoke, sounds are for visitors to my layout and I don't have many of those. I don't plan on getting any more motive power (sorry all you dealers) unless I have too. Also there is little made for the MEC (diesels). Just looking for any improvements in operational control. Can't see spending money on features I won't use. Plus, I want to keep things simple. I'm a little intimidated by the complexity of the Legacy CAB2 system given what I have read on the forum.

You heading out my way anytime soon?  Or Dave's way.  Would love to show you.  It's simple.

Cape Cod Northern,

I will not call you crazy however Gary makes a good point the Legacy Cab2 is not complex at all, and I love the big HHRC.  I have Legacy, TMCC and ERR and all run form the Cab2 really well.  I love the way the Engines program via the Lionel modules, way cool stuff.

Gary,

Thanks for the hook up lesson on the TMCC base to the Cab1L base with the 2Y 194 Cable, and not connecting the TMCC base to the Tracks, that is way cool, and this is the 2nd time I have heard of doing this, and Marty is also correct, Lionel has no instructions for doing this hook up.  Got to admit when I 1st heard about connecting the two bases I wondered if it really worked.  Do the Legacy and TMCC engines then both work with the TMCC and the Cab1L HHRC's when you connect the Bases?

CAPECOD,

I have the Cab2 with base along with the CAB 1 TMCC base and 2 Cab1 remotes.  I have them hooked up like GARY stated bases tied together with the Y cable, and placed my Cab1s around layout to operated any Lionel engine on the track.  All you have to remember is the engine number to punch into the remote.  Easy peasy and incase of a runaway engine you just grab the nearest remote.  Works like a safety switch.  Also when friends come over they can enjoy the engines and run them too.  Great to get visitors stared in model trains.

He was asking about connecting a Base 1L and TMCC base together.  I haven't seen anyone confirm that this can actually be done. @Railsounds maybe able to clear this point up.

Unlike the Cab2/Base2, the Base-1L does NOT come with a Legacy Y cable because it was not designed to work in parallel with an original TMCC Base-1. I see a lot of speculation here. But it's not clear from my reading this thread if anyone has actually seen this work.

I have not.

In passing in a email with Dave Olson on another matter he came back with this.  So Cape I think you will need the full Legacy.

"Not recommended to do so. The Legacy base has code in it to remedy any issues between the two. The Base1L does not.  Not entirely sure what would happen if one was to try it however. Would be a good experiment."

There is no mystery here.  An original TMCC base should NOT be used with a Base 1L which was the original question as confirmed by Dave Olson.

Furthermore...

A Base 1L should NOT be used with a Legacy base.

An original TMCC base can be used with a Legacy Base using the provided Y cable and 1 connection to the layout from the Legacy Base.

The remotes line up as follows...

An original Cab1 or Legacy Cab2 CAN NOT be used with a Base 1L.

A Cab1L CAN NOT be used with an original TMCC Base.

A Cab 1L can be used with a Base 1L or Legacy base.

A Legacy Cab2 can be used with a Legacy base only.

Any of the above can be used in multiples with the bases they are compatible with.  The Legacy base stores all the information so any Legacy remote connecting to a base will have all the information store in the base it's connected to.

Especially with the last few responses, it is appearing more like the answer is NO to my original question. I am not willing to invest in equipment just to "try it out". Looks like I will be purchasing a Legacy CAB2 system. Thanks all for yor input. I think it was a good discussion!

YES,   Since I don't do Diesels, would love to have you come over some weekend Cape.  Bring a few, we'll MU them with a few of my Legacy steamers.

If a Legacy base will run a cab-1 cab-1L and cab-2 remotes, why would you need a cab-1 or cab-1L base hooked to it?

Dave, why would you need a second Legacy system?

Sorry, don't know much about the systems and getting close to buying my first command system.

To use a Cab1 (TMCC) you must you the Y cord that comes with Legacy to connect to the TMCC base.  The Cab1 talks to the TMCC base which then communicates to the Legacy base via the serial Y cord.  The Legacy base will then send the commands out to the locomotives.

The Cab1L will talk directly to the Legacy base without any other hardware.  You do NOT need a Base1L.

Folks who want some Legacy features and want to spend less will use A Cab1L and Base 1L combination to operate Legacy and TMCC lcomotives.  The Legacy engines will have a few Legacy features such a quilling whistle..

GVDobler,

I am getting a great deal on the 2nd 990 Legacy from Mark, in reality purchasing a Cab1L and Base1L would have cost me even more money, than picking up the full 990 Legacy from Mark B.  It's a big win for me if I ever have to send my 990 Legacy back to Lionel for additional repairs, it's happened 2 time now and I loose my ability to run my FTCC switches thru out my Train Room, without the Cab2/990 Base.  I really do not want this to happen ever again, I am about to invest in more FTCC 072 switches and have a bunch already thru out the new Train Room.  Just got the Legacy 990 back yesterday, great to have my wireless FTCC Switches operating from remote control again.  IMO it's the biggest engineering development made by any company for many many years.  I actually purchased Legacy because of this fantastic Lionel engineering.  Never have owned a TMCC base or HHRC before I purchased the Legacy.  During all that time I ran DCS with AIU Switch control with I absolutely hated, because of all the wiring.

You can't see them in the pictures real well because of the Trains, however there are 10 wireless FTCC Switches on the Bar Top and lower big Tunnel layouts alone, all controlled by my Cab2 HHRC. I figure when the other half of the Train Room is completed, there will probably be 28 - 30 FTCC Switches in operation thru out the Train Room.
