Jeff, you can probably obtain a different motor and have someone like Frank Timko pull the worm gear and put it on the new motor.  The flywheel and Odyssey sensor are no problem with normal tools, the worm gears are very stubborn and need better tools.  I'm going to have to give another try pulling one of the worms now that I have harder pins for my gear puller...

I would think you could run a signal motor, if the remaining motor has the tach tied to the controller.  Or maybe running it without odyssey speed control.  Just a thought.

Is there any markings (part number) on the motor itself that you could cross reference?

I see they have a similar motor, but the worm gear looks a bit different. I am not sure the pitch and diameter of the worm are any different.

I would hope that this same original motor was used in other engines.  You may be able to buy a motor and then strip off the component(s) from one and place on the other.

Or you might be able to find a used DC motor on one of the auction sites.

Lots of the suitable motors, it's finding one with the proper worm that's the issue.  I can assure you, if it has a separate part number at Lionel, it almost surely has another pitch and/or diameter worm.
