TMCC versus Legacy

DCC or DCS on that layout?  You can use a TMCC command base with the MTH DCS system, but if it's DCC I'm not sure what you need.

If you're considering buying either the CAB1/command base or the Legacy system, I'd get the Legacy system, it's going to be the future for some time for Lionel.  It'll also do anything you can do with the CAB1.

this is some of the information I have gathered fro the Lionel videos.

Legacy frequencies  FM

Wireless CAB-1 to TMCC Command Base at 27 MHz

Wireless CAB-2 to and from Legacy Command Base at 2.4 GHz  with 9 different channels is equivalent to 2400 MHz or 100 times more hertz or signal that moves through the air than the CAB1.

455kilo hertz to track

8 or 9 bit digital signal - 8 bit TMCC engines, 9 bit legacy engines only.

32 speed steps cab1

200 speed steps Cab2

Current legacy version 1.3 base and handheld must be same version.

Nothing is stored in the cab everything is stored in the base.

No overlays needed on cab2.

For the most part both systems are the same. The Legacy provides more capability for those Legacy engines that can use it but will run TMCC engines also. Lionel currently produces the Legacy system. The TMCC system is no longer manufactured and not available from Lionel. You probably can find a TMCC system on ebay or some other seller location but replacement parts for the base and hand-held controller are generally not available or hard to come by. Both base units can be operated by the DCS system for most actions but DCS does not provide control for all functions and not for the extra functions available with the Legacy system.

I had TMCC - 1 and recently upgraded to Legacy. 

There are many more features that are available only when running Legacy motive power but the ones that I provided are really universal to any Lionel Command control engine.

Some of the basic benefits that Legacy offers over first generation TMCC:

Better range - My TMCC system barely allowed for 15' before I'd start loosing connection with the base (this may have been isolated to my set). Legacy, however, offers very good reception through our entire house.

No 70's era telescoping antenna - These were completely outdated when the CAB-1 was first introduced in the 90's.

Audible and visible feedback on input - This one is huge. The squishy button and free-spinning throttle wheel on the CAB-1 made it difficult to know if your command was received or how much change you were imparting on your speed. The CAB-2 buttons deliver an audible beep and the wheel is notched so you can easily judge the amount of movement you are imparting.  Also, with many commands, you get visual verification on the screen when you increase or decrease smoke output, etc.. Nothing like that on the CAB-1. 

Speed steps - Along with the above mentioned, this allows for exact speeds to be input and maintained.

Lashup creation - much easier lash up builder with visual icons.

Recording capability - TMCC 1 requires the addition of the ARC for this.

ok guys now stated above I am getting this to operate my Signal Man Cars anywhere on the Layout with My DCS system.  I do not own any of the newer Lionel Engines and at this point it looks like they are priced a bit out of my pocket range at the current time. 

But From what I can gather at this point from what has been posted is that for Reliability and Parts and Support I should go with the Newer Legacy System Versus the TMCC System

I have 4 mth cars that have beenconverted to use tmcc  with the err kits(2signalman box cars,  1 signalman caboose, and 1milk car).  I use my cab1 forthose cars, legacy for my tmcc engines, and my dcs controller for my proto 2 engines.

I believe youcould operate these items with the ERR boards with the DCS remote. You would only need a TMCC base to do this. You could also do it with the Legacy base but the chances of finding a Legacy alone would be slim to none. If you're thinking of buying and running Legacy engines in the future and the budget will allow, get the Legacy. But if your railroad is cash strapped like mine the TMCC base at 50 to 80 dollars is better than 350 for Legacy.

Barry over on the DCS forum told me that i would need a cab 1 or legacy remote to initially set up the Mini Commanders and then I would be able to operate them with the DCS remote.  Like  I said earlier I do not believe that I will be able to get any of the Legacy or Tmcc Locomotives any time soon. So any Idea on where I can pick up a TMCC and Cab One.

You probably mean a TMCC Command Base # 6-12911 and a CAB 1 Remote # 6- 12868.  Just to clarify.  There are probably plenty available.  All the folks who switched to Legacy may be looking to unload their original equipment for a reasonable price.  I think I saw some listed on for sale forum.   

You could probably find a friend or club to do initial setup.  Of course, I'm guessing that the requirement for TMCC to setup means you couldn't change anything about the configuration with the DCS either.

Chances are, the old used TMCC gear will be fine and not need service/repair.  If it does fritz out, probably just as cheap to buy another used one and not repair the old one.

Legacy would be available new and have some warranty time, and would be worth repairing if something happened a few years from now.  It would also bring those Lionel Legacy locos closer to your layout, as you're more likely to pick up a loco when you already have the command system to best support it.
