I'm fairly new to model railroading having finally acquired a Lionel set about a year ago.  Since then I've picked up a couple of other pieces (Mikado, and several Generals) and one MTH -- Lincoln train which I posted about a while back.  My layout is starting to come together so I thought some of you might be interested in seeing it so far.  I started it as 6 x 12 island which kept growing until I couldn't reach in the middle to make changes, so I dismantled the whole thing and started over.  This time using a more practical dog bone shape (sort of).  I'm learning a lot the hard way, but enjoying it much.  Hope you enjoy looking at my primitive video and feel free to comment with suggestions if you have any.

I used the Mikado for this video -- not really typical of the time.

Oh, by the way.  The theme of the layout is Tombstone AZ circa 1880 - 1909 with a lot of imagination thrown in.  I'm somewhat restricted on space, so could really build the town exactly, but I feature many of the structures of the time.  Just about all of the structures were scratch built by me, as well as lots of the scenery.  Still much to go.

Enjoy

Nice layout Al. I like the erra modeled. I agree with Bill, look into the MTH 19th century engines and rolling stock. I have some and they would look great on your layout. One of my pet peeves with MTH and Lionel is putting radio communication on steam engines. It really stands out to me on a 19th century layout. I really like your engines in the yard. They look right on that layout.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.  I'll definitely check out the MTH cars.  The reason I was running the Mikado is that I was testing to see if it cleared all of the scenic I have along the tracks, so I decided to video this with a bunch of odd cars.  I'll have to be more diligent in the future.

Speaking of diligent, don't know if you noticed but in the closing frames I had a near disaster.  I was busy with the camera and didn't notice that a group of cars broke loose from the train.  The engine and its fleet went on about its business and on return started to push the idle cars.  Well I obviously wasn't paying attention, but noticed at the last minute Hey! the engine is pushing those cars.  For some reason one of the switches to a side track where one of my generals was sitting clicked open and the pushing engine started to head right for the general, slamming into it.  Fortunately I killed all power before too much damage was done.  Luckily the camera was facing away so I didn't capture this mess on video.

Working on more structures and senics from the period.  Thanks again for the comments.  I'll post more down the line.

Nice layout! I like the town- Tombstone. I was in Tombstone, AZ this past winter. Don't forget the newspaper office- The Epitaph.

I've been working on an old west town myself. So far I have completed the sheriff's office/jail and I based it on the one used in "Rio Bravo" with John Wayne. I am now working on a saloon and a gun shop.

As others have said, there are some box cars put out by MTH that are right for this period. I believe they call them "19th Century Freight" or something like that. I use two of them with my Lionel General.

Thanks for the video!
