I am taking my layout to an even more tin plate/toy train look by using old Tootsie Toy and Midgetoy vehicles and such instead of the usual 1/43 scale cars and trucks.

To fill in while I build my collection of old toy cars I have been building stand in vehicles from sheet styrene. Thought maybe someone might like to see.

Here's a shot of a truck I was building, a blue hardtop I made and a couple of vintage Midgetoy items in the back ground. I can't get the window cutouts right so I do solid windows like on some of the old Auburn rubber toy cars.

I try to build to replicate the way the old die cast cars were made from a simple mold.

Here's the truck under construction above after painting and "aging" parked with real old die cast toy trucks.

Here's the blue hardtop and another homemade truck with a vintage Tootsie Toy Merc. The trailers are going away.

What?  Out of sheet styrene, vacuum-formed?  They certainly capture the Tootsietoy image; the pickup reminds me of the TT Diamond T truck on my childhood layout.  The forming looks professional.  Different strokes......

No, not vacuum formed. I build them out pieces glued together. Lots of shaping with files and sandpaper!
