Traditional 3-Rail Tie Finish

Everyone,

What is the finish on traditional Standard Gauge and O Gauge ties? Is it black paint or black oxide? Please limit the discussion to just traditional Standard and O Gauge. I am not worried about O-27, Super-O, T-Rail, Gargraves (which Phantom does have a black-oxide center rail), or Menards. I also know that the new Standard Gauge track being produced by USA Track (Thanks Kirk!) has black oxide ties but I cannot find a definitive answer about past production traditional track.

The O gauge Lionel track I have from the mid to late 1950s has black paint on the ties.

Depends on the maker. Prewar American Flyer track both in O and Standard would have ties with finish the same as the track, no coloring. Except for prewar American Flyer O gauge ties sometime after 1938 was painted black.
