Transformer to Use for S Scale Operation

 Pretty much any Lionel AC transformer will work, with the old and new AF AM MTH/S helper. Just make sure the loco is AC and NOT DC or you will fry a lot of things in the engine. Also keep the voltage no higher than 18v or you could have problems burning stuff out as well. Al

I've run conventional AC American Models and S Helper Service locomotives using a Z4000 with no problems.

Using an old KW also worked, but there is a jackrabbit start because the KW's lowest variable output voltage is around 5 volts.  Otherwise, running was no problem.

Wire the KW to run 0 to 14 volts. The 6 volt pin becomes the common. The 20 volt fixed is now 14 fixed. The U terminals become 6 fixed reverse polarity. The A ans B throtles become o to 14 volts.

I've been using a MTH Z-750 with good results. Good slow speed control.

Thanks for the responses and input.  If I get the set I am contemplating, I probably will stick with the easier use of the Z-1000 or Z-750.  But it is good to know how other transformers could be utilized as well.  Thank you again.
