Trouble with lionel Frisco sd-40

I was running two Seaboard rs-11s with the sd-40 unaddressed silent and on a powered side track when the sd-40 diesel sounds came on and revved up through run 8. I powered down and detected an electrical smell from the engine and the cab Windows seemed smoked up. The area above the smoke unit was very hot too. Any ideas as to what happened? Thank you for replies!

First step, remove the shell and see if anything shows tell tale damage.
