At a small local train show yesterday here in AZ we were running my friend's new set of UP Alco PA's (set no. 20-21000) when the power unit started to make some weird noises. Started as a kind of whirring sound,IMG_3426 louder at higher speed. So we re-lubed the power trucks and it got worse. Kind of a whirring-chattering noise. On further investigation we discovered a lot of play with the small idler gears that interconnects the driven axles on both trucks. To the point where the small gears could easily be deflected about 15-20 degrees off alignment on their axles.

Anyone else had anything like this on this generation of Premier diesels?

Thanks,

Rod

Check under the hood ? maybe something rubbing on flywheel ?  Brake shoes not rubbing ?  sanding pipes not rubbing ?   Smoke unit fan ?

Thanks Clem, I should have mentioned we had it apart because one motor screw was loose also and the motor had become detached. Nothing obviously wrong inside. No sign of anything that could rub anything else.

I bought the plated Santa Fe Alco PA units and both powered units had issues that my MTH repair station took care of.  One unit was shorting out due to two locations where wires were contacting the plated shell and shorting out.  There were various bulbs out and one puckup rollor not comnected to power.  They are fine now and look and run great at this time.  I was surprised at the multiple issues considering my recently aquired E8's and SD70ACE are perfect.
