Ultradomes

I think these would do reasonably well in O gauge, allowing for fantasy paint schemes.

Why would you want/ need fantasy schemes? There are several prototypical ones that can already be done

Rapido is only making a car available in 4 numbers, available only through Rocky Mountain Railtours not the entire train.

They're making the later version of cars RM ordered with larger windows. See my pictures where I have examples of each

Ahem, MTH has not made a GP40-2. They only made a GP40.

There are differences in the details.

I apologize. The prototype is a -2 so I assumed the model was. I guess the saying is true...

I am not sure that these would sell well in 3-rail.  How many people would run a train of these cars?  Also, I think that most manufacturers could paint their current full length domes in Rocky Mountaineer and the other schemes rather than making a scale model of this unique car.  Most modelers would not know the difference.  This is how manufacturers get away with making a dome car in NH and PRR colors, etc.  (The PRR and NH never had any dome cars.)

I rode the Rocky Mountaineer in one of these dome cars.  They are a wonderful way to sightsee and an awesome dining experience.  I highly recommend this train.

The biggest challenge I see if that it is hard enough to get enough orders to start design on scale Amfleet Cars and that fleet has been in operation for 42+ years.

NHjoe, if people are buying the SF/AMTK El Capitan sets, I see no reason why people would not by a set of the ultradomes

Jonathan, I spoke with several people wanting the Amfleet cars in the modern schemes phase IV and V. Amfleet 1 are still running and are painted in these schemes so limiting to the first three cuts your customer base

PRR never owned domes, but the did USE them.  They leased domes from NP to run on one the CHI to FLA multi railroad passenger trains.  But did they repaint the car to tusvan.

There were no PRR painted dome cars for through service.  Only sleepers were painted by other railroads into PRR livery for such trains.  Most commonly they were 10-6 configurations.

The South Wind did have a dome at times, but it was a Northern Pacific dome in home road paint.

Pennsy domes?  

Reminds me of Kato's early N-scale releases of complete (sets of 6 and 4 cars) passenger car sets for various flags for the U.S. market.  Kato, recognizing that the PRR never had dome cars, substituted another pullman or coach (can't recall the specific substitution.) car in place of the dome car that was in the sets of other road names.  

HOWEVER, sensing that this might not be acceptable to the entire market, they included a card which entitled the bearer to PURCHASE for a limited time a dome car in complementary PRR tuscan livry.  Savvy persons took advantage of the deal, apparently, and subsequently watched the price of this never-was-such-a-car skyrocket on the secondary market! 

So much for the disdain for the fantasy realm of this hobby!

"Why would you want or need fantasy schemes?"    Oh, I don't know....because people who are in this hobby and have the money to spend on something that brings a smile to their face, and hours of fun to experience, might want one....or two....or three......???

BTW.....if the subject is a car of limited prototypical heritage coming in two different window sizes, why not market both as Ultradome and Ultradomer??

Matt - Phases I through IV are on the list.  Phase V is not, but would be a worthwhile addition as it does cover 2000 to present. 

Too bad Atlas won't commit to a ACS64 in O at this time.  I'd be in for that and a string of phase V cars to go with my preorder for 8 phase III cars.  If it weren't for the inaccurate super bright plating on the phase IV/V MTH AEM7, I'd consider that as a modern power option too.  However, I photographed enough since 2012 to know they had lost their sheen a long time ago. 

Richard's point stands though that orders in general are not coming in to meet that 1000 car threshold to move forward.  If you have people wanting phase V cars, you know the routine.  Have them send a note to Scott.  He'll add it to the list if enough "votes" come in.  Personally I'd love to see this project go forward.  They would go great with my F40PH fleet and Horizon cars.  

I have heard that MTH and Siemens have a contract which only MTH can market O scale Siemens equipment.  I do not know if that is true or not.  Some S70 cars in O would br nice.

No one in O ever made SCL passenger cars so I had to make them myself. Guess MTH never heard of the SCL? 

The cars were made for several different railroads, like SIRTS' SCL version. Milwaukee Road had some. Colorado Rail Car acquired them and created the Florida Fun train and built the others now used in Alaska. They were not restored. They were modified.

Look at ARR cars 551 through 651 ARR lists the cars' history.

The others are owned by the cruise lines and run by ARR under contract.

I am not sure if you would get enough orders for a custom build run.

Resurrecting a really old thread but it's interesting what has transpired since this. The last of the 2004 superliners are doing extremely well on the secondary market. Definitely biased as I am pining for some ultradomes for my ARR collection, but anything outside of Amtrak in a bilevel/double offering seems to be very expensive on the secondary. Perhaps Lionel/MTH pay attention.

Um, MTH hasn’t produced any new tooling in at least five years now, and is dedicated to limited runs of its existing tooling under a completely different management/ownership plan as part of Mike Wolf’s semiretirement. Plenty of discussion about this, so I’m mystified why people keep mentioning MTH as if the company didn’t try to close down in 2021. The company hasn’t produced a catalog since 2020.

I am aware of MTH shutting down, then not shutting down, but making stuff still and not etc. To be honest I've been away from O scale for awhile and while I did research the subject a few weeks ago it still hasn't been glaringly obvious what the current state is. Last I had read was the company still producing products with the tooling Lionel purchased or obtained. Either way, sorry you're "mystified"  by me mentioning it. Old habits die hard. A simple nudge would have sufficed.

Since, this thread was started over 6 years ago, have importers like Golden Gate Depot, exhausted models of the popular passenger trains and are we getting closer to considering unique, regional or commuter trains, like these Ultradomes?

With all the excitement, on these forums, about recent arrivals and announcements from Golden Gate Depot, I was wondering if there were still some iconic American passenger trains, from the last Century, that haven't been offered yet.
