I've tried searching the forum but haven't found anything much past the January 2014 announcement that Lionel was publishing the Legacy protocol.

I've just picked up the 3rd edition of Barry's DCS book as I'm thinking of adding DCS to my Legacy/TMCC/LCS layout.  Since I already have the Legacy base and the LCS WiFi, I believe I have everything required for control from a 3rd party app.  I think Hikel Trains was supposed to be doing something that could control DCS and Legacy/TMCC/LCS  but I don't see anything on their website and I'm only interested in an iOS solution.

If there is something like what I'm describing perhaps I only need a TIU rather than a TIU + DCS handheld remote to add more MTH engines to the 2 I already own.

Nothing yet but I wouldn't go anywhere.

Any educated guesses as to the chance the DCS remote would be given the ability to control all of Legacy the way it can currently control the basic TMCC Cab1 commands?  Or is the suspected route this would be made available a smartphone/tablet type of application?

I'm beginning to think it would be a good idea to get a TIU with the DCS remote rather than get a "headless" TIU and pair it with a WIU.  And it would be a big plus if that DCS remote would then have the ability to be a "one remote to rule them all" type of device.

I doubt the DCS remote would be given that. Personally I hate the thumb wheel for quilling the whistle.  My guess is would be via the app. It can be "tuned" to make use of Legacy rather than a set in stone hardware controller.
