So, now I'm going all over the map.  I have looked on the internet and don't find much info.  Could these PS1 engines be converted to PS3?  Is a PS3 upgrade kit available?  Would the cost be greater?  Would the upgrade include a "quilable" whistle or is that dependent on aditional hardware being in the engine?

As far as kits go, all future PS upgrades are suppose to be PS-32.  Which means a PS-3 diesel board modified with a top board to drive bulbs vice LEDs.  Everything else in the kit is the same as the PS-2 kits.  (Harness, bulbs and speakers/couplers).  No battery.

It is designed to use PS-2 3V sound files to match up with the upgrade sound files to get the lighting and such right.

It does have QW if the sound file for your engine has it.  So for your examples I think the answer is no PS-2 3V SF with QW.

These kits will be about $20 or so more expensive then PS-2.

Because of board design, PS-32 may not fit in smaller engines.

PS-2 3V can still be used with Supercap to eliminate battery.

Kits have been pushed back to Aug, but I have parts to do the PS-2 3V upgrade.  Comes with warranty.  G

GGG, first of all thanks a million for taking the time to explain this.  So from your last comment, I gather that there is no current plan for a real upgrade to full PS-3 in kit form (i.e. one that would support a PS-3 sound file that might contain the QW function?).

Also, the PS-32 you described with a diesel board, that will provide all the proper functions in a steamer if the correct sound file is used?  Sounds a little confusing on the surface?

Thanks again for your time and effort.

PS-2 board are a single unit located in one position.  When in the tender this limited functions on the engine because of the 10 wire harness limitation.

PS-3 O uses 2 boards for Steam.  One in boiler and one in tender.  Connected via 6 wires.  The diesel is a single engine unit, so the board is one unit too.

So the PS-32 upgrade kit for steam replicates the PS-2 method of a single board.  So the diesel board is used.

Characteristics for the engine come from the sound file not the hardware.

There is a post above in the locked section that gives more details about PS-3.

You can use a PS-3 sound file, but for steam, the light outputs in that file may be different and that may cause the engine lights not to work correctly.  The firmware in the board was made to correspond to the PS-2 3V sound files.  G
