I’d consider selling it, but it’s not nearly as smooth as cruise commander.

The older CC should have no problem operating the sounds.  Can you operate the horn, bell, crew talk from the remote?

None of those work. Just the couplers, forward reverse direction, and motion in either direction.

Sounds like the serial data is not getting to the sound board.  The oddity of not being able to program it suggests more wiring issues.

The other possibility is I suppose the board is bad.  Did you swap the R2LC with a known working one?

I did. I also tried a different RailSounds board.

This is the serial buffer circuit that I use when the RailSounds board loads the serial data too much, maybe that's the issue?  The R2LC 5VDC is on pins 19-20 of the R2LC, I just tap off the socket.

First try tapping Serial data off the R2LC pin directly to the sound system, vice the CC 4 pin connector.  If that works, no buffer needed.  If not, the buffer is needed, but making sure Sound Board works in command first.  G

I'm a little hard pressed to see how connecting directly to the R2LC will help George unless the Cruise Commander is damaged. 

Because the output on the cruise board 4 pin is buffered or isolated.  So it has some effect on signal strength I presume.  I have had some installations that did not work using the 4 pin connector harness.  So I removed the Serial data wire from the connector and soldered directly to the pin the R2LC attaches too and that allowed the sound to work fine. 

Jon Z stated they were optimized to work with the RS5 sound package.  I have not had trouble when using all ERR boards, but I have seen this issue pop up even with Cruise CDR when integrating with RS4.0.  G
