Re: Upper Level on 4x8 Layout help

Hi there,

I am looking to expand my existing O scale 4x8 layout by adding an upper level. I am just confused on how to do this and make it look pleasing. You can see in the pictures that I started to attach pieces of 2x4 to the sides of the table, probably could have used L brackets as well, and then on top of the 2x4, a piece of strapping as the roadbed. I am not sure if this it the best way to accomplish what I want which is a simple top loop, no cross overs or turnouts etc...The curves for O scale will probably have to be O31/O36 tops as I can't swing the track out too far without taking up more space in the basement. I may even consider HO for the top loop. I would really like to somehow incorporate trestle bents into the top loop but I really can't see where to place them without interferring with the existing track. Any input would be helpful.

Thats a good looking layout!

Are you planning for the second level to be part of the lower level scene or are you looking to create something separate? if the latter i would be tempted to go higher and create a second layout - if you see what I mean.

Thats really my dilemma. For another O scale loop, I don't think I can fit that into the existing scenery because the 4x8 is already maximized space wise. More than likely it would be a top loop just running above the scenery if you will. Unfortunately the wife would beat me with a branch if I built up any higher.

Well since this is the Mike's forum, did you think about turning your siding into an elevated climb to the second level? Based on your pictures I did a quick mock-up. It has a 5% climb so steep, but not impossible. The SCARM file needs the hills and bridge supports cleaned up. You could also move the route over so that the loop rounds the mountain. It will be edge to edge but not a lot taller and will fit into your existing scenery. That should keep the Mrs. happy.
