I'm looking to build the AF 1957 28113 Layout as part of an overall O gauge layout (8'x26').  It will take up a corner section of the overall layout.  The 28113 uses an AF trestle set to go up and over itself.  I have a set of instructions for a Lionel 110 trestle set.  It seems to indicate that the trestle bents can be used for S gauge.  Has anyone done this?

Would you use the entire 110 set or delete some of the higher bents since S gauge wouldn't need to be quite so high.  I have tons of Lionel trestles so this would expedite putting this together.  I don't have any AF trestles.  Thanks for any help.

Which set to use depends on the height you need to reach. The AF set might not take you up high enough to go over Lionels without extras piers with shims on or under them. (also, some lionel equipment needs up to 7¾" overhead clearance nearly 2" taller than the tressels. "Cement" footing shims of painted 2x4s is what most folk with 6"+ needs use to rise more.

The grade is a % of rise vs run that doesn't change with scale used. The track lengths however move the intended spacing of piers at joints and that does change the grade.

PW Lionels have a steep grade over 4% with 8¾" tracks. You really want two sets per grade with 1/8 shims under one set to get nearer 2% . (hardboard wall paneling is about the right thickness)

Lionel tracks were 8¾" long for 0-27, 10"-O, and 9" Super O. Each had a slightly different grade when using the same tressels, O% was lowest.

If tressels on an el,  are firmly attached to the layout kinda near each other so two in a curve are at a 90° to each other , this little bit of cross bracing does wonders for lateral stability of a whole loop. Half of mine are only connected to the track and the other footings just sit there relying on the 90′ pairs to sure it up from any movement. (It will seem rickity like dominoes until you get 1 90° bracing pair done and or secure track to gound level . (you might not be doing a loop, but the general principal will be understood once you begin imo)

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies.  The Flyer will just be contained within a Flyer section layout and not have to go over any O gauge.  The Flyer straights match the length of regular O gauge straights at 10" so the grade should be the same.

There were different ways to attach O gauge to the bents.  The newer ones used a plastic clip piece.  Somewhere in time, a U shaped metal clip was also used.  Neither of these work with the Flyer track.  However, there is a type of attachment that uses a slide that goes into the bent itself and then a square clip that covers the two adjoining ties and is screwed into place to hold the track to the bent.  This square clip also works to hold the ties on the Flyer track.  It is secure but just a bit off-center.  I think this will work for me.

The question that I still have is just how high was the maximum height of AF trestles? I have plenty of Lionel trestle bents so I can stop at any height and then continue to the down slope.  Thanks for continuing to help.

Keep safe,

Gilbert made many types of trestle sets. Limiting the discussion to just the plastic trestle sets there were 24 piece sets, 26 piece sets and sets of just one size tall trestle. The all one size and the 24 piece sets are 4 1/2", the 26 piece sets are 5". The Frontiersman sets that came with an over/under track assortment use cardboard trestles along with a mountain/tunnel/pass set. My S gauge layout uses 4 1/2" minimum clearance from the railhead. I do not own any Frontiersman engines.
