I'm curious as to others thoughts on layouts that have components that are vertically extended from the floor of the layout upward as well as those that may extend down through the floor of the layout.  I'm thinking of having a mountain range on my master layout coupled with a ravine along one edge of the range in the aspirations of really pushing the 3D scenic effect.  I also envision other sloping areas.

I would like for track to come around and up the ridge and follow the ridge contour to the opposite side where the track would have to tunnel through the ridge (I'm not a big fan of tunnels.)  I expect I'll have to have some rail banking following NMRA guidelines on the curved sections of track as they ascend.

@Avanti - I know you have some raised areas along your layout, albeit they maintain track level.  @wbg pete - You have various scenic ridges on your floating islands.  I'm curious how you made them and how you were able to populate them with so many trees.
