Vignettes Along The Branch Line (1)

 

My original "Vignettes Along the Branch Line" thread was really drifting off course and I felt it lost its purpose so I combined the last several months posts into one photo album. I am still building this story and will continue adding to it. I do appreciate comments you've all made and hope you still find enjoyment in this. Thanks OGR this is a fun place. 

This one gives me the chills.. BURR!

 

Exceptional! The lighting and background are spot on. The B&W shots are really cool.

While on the subject of snow and inclement weather how about this...

In the 1940's Santa Fe E6 #12L with the Chief connecting service for Denver heavy in head end businsss blasts through a typical March blizzard. 

 

The model is a Key Model Imports E6 ATSF #12L. Pecos River Brass Fishbelly 70' baggage is also pictured on the Longmont Terminal and Northern layout. 

It is too bad the resolution on the uploads is so low. This was a huge file.. I could host off OGR; I would rather not. 

Now that a great shot. I know it was some work, the snow on the ground is a great touch.. What are you using to simulate the falling snow. I thinking  water being sprayed in front of the modules?

Fantastic modeling, it should be in the History Museum at the Smithsonian.

Superb modeling. You are blessed with such artistic and photographic skills and no detail is too small to include. Thanks for posting the great photos.

Thank you fellas, all that cold snow makes me want to warm things up a bit with some classic Alco PA action on the Moffat near Leyden Siding, next stop Denver Union Station with today's California Zephyr. Well maybe not today; more like early Spring 1955 or 1956. 

Track speed between Rocky and Arvada is roughly 40-45mph... I think #6001 is hitting it pretty close to that mark.

I never see snow but I know what a stormy day with hail is like and that's what it looks like to me...... a cold stormy day, something I only like in photos and you have got it right mate. Thank goodness we are blessed with mostly sunshine in West Australia! Grin. Roo.

Outstanding! Erik, did you do all the modelling on those buildings or are other group members involved? I know natural light can help the illusion some, but these clearly would hold up great either way.

Silver Penthouse brings up the markers on today's California Zephyr as She rolls past Plain View westbound on the Moffat Line.

The Atlas O CZ makes for a nice set. Looks especially nice in its native habitat. 

Train 39 heads for Rainbow Cut leaving Plain View on its way to San Francisco.

OMG talk about memories "Johnsons"? If the office was on the right vs left it would be me attending the pumps. (though the pumps would be a bit newer) I hung out bothering that old coot till he put me to work. Tips only as he fake slept always afraid he'd get busted for allowing an under age kid to be there. I was twelve at best, but tenacious about earning money. I must have drove half a dozen store owners nuts trying to earn money. He was a softy

Great work Eric!  Is the McDonald's the MTH model or was it built from a kit?  Are the pictures of the mill and baking powder factory pre-installation on the layout.  The backgrounds don't appear to be backdrops on a layout, they look like the photos were taken outside against the real sky.  Ditto some of the farm shots.  The backgrounds look so good they are either excellent backdrops or maybe even photoshopped for the album.  Either way the modelling in front of those backgrounds is tremendous.  Only the extreme close-ups give it away.

I would like to mention some love I have for the O Scale Hauler... these boxes are fantastic. I loaded up nearly $23,000 worth of rare brass models and hauled them up in the mountains on Saturday and moved from one location to another and these Haulers are such a god send. The models often times detailed sit on the wheels and can be lifted out with a cradle of ReBoxx poly wrap. Fabulous boxes Doug! Thanks!

Somewhere on your layout, though, you ought to have a sign advertising Duffy's Delicious Drinks. Really popular in Colorado years ago. They made some of the oddest flavors of soda pop around and when everything else was selling for dime, you could buy theirs for nine cents (wotta deal) Almost every grocery, cafe or service station had it available.

I was doing this book looking for a promotional piece for display browsing at shows where we couldn't set up the entire layout for display. It is possible down the road in the future to use it as a fund raising tool after we establish the IRS details for the Colorado O Scale Modelers first.

I have made some improvements to the book see below. 

As far as selling copies I can sure have one printed for anyone that would be willing to pay for the actual print costs. I will sell them through my own art business under my name.

Sadly due to the limited number of prints I'm doing it's more expensive than a typical book published in the 1000's of copies. Nontheless I would be honored if anyone would want to buy a copy. 

 

 

The most recent edit of the project. I think it will be a good conversation piece for me at the events or a great Christmas gift for anyone on my list that likes model trains and or model photography.  As a film maker and visual artist my gamut of friends are varied in their interests however we all share a interest in the visual media. The book is 11x14" hard cover with a dust jacket, a typical coffee table book.

I believe the publisher for under 5 copies is $95. At 10 or more it drops. Still this book should be $35-$40 printed in China and at 5000 copies that can done. Sadly

The 1:30 arrives on time with mail and express; today's number 29 has substituted power from the Rio Grande.

It's difficult to imagine it getting better than these but they seem to always reach even higher levels. Since the layout is sectional, there doesn't seem to be a limit to how far you guys can take this.

That is amazing.  I have never seen anything like that.  And I like it!  Bravo!  That is superb.  

Charge $120 a book.  I would bet you'd sell loads of them.  Then every time you take a new awesome pic, sell a copy of it or a new page for $5 a piece to add to the book.  Self perpetuating cash flow.  Just a thought.  Very cool.  Very, very cool.

I can't help but be fascinated by your modeling and photos.  After a second look, my favorite is the black and white in your original fourteen that has all the shadows from the fire escape stairs on the side of the buildings.  It is mesmorizing.  Dude, that is fine art.  I'm glad I saw this.  Keep up the good work.  Cheers,       BK

Thank you Bill, I really appreciate that! I am trying to bring a touch of fine art to our end of the hobby. It's worth it for what we create; the effort we spend building and composing our scenes why not try and illustrate it as close as possible to those who don't or are unable see it.

I'd definitely buy that calendar. I'd even put in a standing order for each successive year. I'm in for the "coffee table" book, too.

I can already feel the creative juices flowing.  Scenes that reflect the seasons of that time of year...

I'm thinking it is definitely doable.  I bought an artist 's calender before and she wasn't flush with paper.  She was an English teacher in Minnesota with a psychedelic flair which I liked.  What I'm saying is the calender may be much cheaper and easier to put together, gauge interest, then when youv'e got them hooked, go for the bigger project.  Strike now while the iron is hot.  Plus, an annual influx of year end cash flow just in time for Christmas.  Sweet deal!

I will add as I am trying to convey, the artist I bought a calendar from wasn't what I would call a technologically savvy person.  She may have went to Kinkos with her prints for all I know.  It was a simple calendar, and it worked for me for a year.  Then I cut out a handful of the artwork and put them in frames.  I am more than sure that Erik has all the resources to put this together.  

I have many scenes already planned.  Almost every month actually.  I will withhold my ideas until we define our boundaries of creative control and a level of compensation we are both comfortable with.  If that's ok with you.  Is it warm in the winter by you?  Double handshake.

We had the Chinooks early this morning; 75-80 mph gusts at 0400. 

 

Number #1182 makes it's way South toward Boulder with a beet train. 

 

I cant wait to get the bridge ready for some photography. 

 

 

Quick little video of some switching about on the LT&N at the Pinehurst event last month. John Cullen of the Colorado Toy Train Group is a terrific host. 

Nice shots glad you are no longer MIA.

Really good modeling and photography. Look like some of them could have actually been taken in Arvada (Co.) in the 1950's.

I'm honored Chuck for the compliment. I'm stunned, thank you. As far as the images locations the majority in this thread are at my home near Leyden, however many are taken on location at Plainview, Longmont, and the Diagonal between Longmont and Boulder at John's home.

 A terribly compressed video I edited down for Instagram.. I may take some near-field recordings of the set up with my external stereo iPhone microphone next time or the D810 with the Rhode mic.. I swear this footage was 4K   

It is a Loksound ESU decoder with an iPad speaker in the firebox and a Tang Band speaker set in the tender. Works pretty well. 

As my friend says "O Scale in your Face!" Yes sir! Love that sound.. And he is my absolute favorite genius in our hobby.

Back to the subject of trains, the Yampa Valley Mail flies through East Portal on its way through to Denver with FT 5484 and friends circa late 50’s or early 60’s. Taken on location on the Moffat Road a little deviation from the usual branch line photos.

I have been trying to figure out a way to explain for some time now working on a series of articles for a magazine that has asked me. In this frame it’s one of my straight modules situated in the favorable light with my structures in their respective places. The steam is an added feature that I develop in a painting program, its treated like an illustration with the models as the focus of the image. There is far more to it than that, I hope that it makes sense. Thank you for the kind compliment.

Thank you for your response.  I knew conceptually how you set up the scenes, but your treatment of the steam/smoke emission from the locomotive was spot on.  This is what captured my curiosity.  

You mentioned that you use a paint program, is there any way of demonstrating this via a video as I'd like to see how it's actually done?

Also what is the cost of your book at this time?

Erik, Beautiful modeling and photography work. I love those DRGW  C- 48 locos.  30 years ago I painted and weathered a pair of them for a NYC area collector. Being a Rio Grande fan it was hard to send them back to the customer!!

Inspirational modeling.  Most of us see our own layouts this way, but few can carry off the prototypical perspective illustrated by these photos.

I’ve been at this at least since 2009, Ken Patterson since 1980s when he inspired me to photo my models when I was kid 1980s. I’ve always been excited about his stuff; I don’t think he likes me as I’ve reached out to him with no luck many times over the years but I’ve learned a lot seeing his amazing stuff like virtually every cover of Mainline Modeler since 1983 or so not to mention countless advertising gigs with everyone from Athearn to Bachmann. I’m glad you enjoy the pictures. OGR is very generous allowing me to share here and the OGR forum is one of the best sources to share online in model railroading it’s a strong platform that the Google bots always find.
