Visionline announcement at York

Dave Olsen wrote to me in an e-mail that there will be a major announcement at York. That was just after I spoke of my disappointment that the Milwaukee Road S-3 had no whistle steam. Dave told me that the board Lionel used did not allow for whistle steam and cylinder steam. I told him that Lionel should have made the S-3 a Vision loco and put in a new board with all the bells and whistles. Soooooooooo . . . . 

Dave said: "Wait til York."

Maybe he's announcing a "Major Award".

Hmmm, maybe its time for the N&W class A? Isn't the 1218 next on the agenda to return to the rails?

Actually, I have it on good authority that Lionel will announce this!

And it will only cost 75% of a Vision Line GG-1!

I'm pretty sure they are announcing the end of the Vision Line due to all the complaining about items in the line.

Aside from some cracked windows and noisy roof-top fans, the VisionLine Centipedes seemed to be good runners, based on those who unpacked them and gave them a test-run.  Unfortunately, they were so poorly accepted in the marketplace, it's probably the only VisionLine product that dealers needed to blow out extra stock at almost half-price within 18 months of delivery!

Hi! I'm with Marty E hoping for a Vision Line UP Veranda Turbine.  Have the earlier one and it's great!  Otherwise a return of the Vision Line Challenger would be cool.  I missed this one first time around.  Of course, I'm sure I'll talk myself into a N&W Class A if that's what's announced.

Except for the UP Centipedes, you can't even pry those from guys cold dead fingers.

It certainly is difficult/almost impossible to second guess just what our favorite three rail scale manufacturers will bring to Market? Lionel could bring some nice Locomotives to market under the label VisionLine, or even bring back a series of really desirable Diesels/Steamers under the title of Century Club 3? Either way, I think we all want the level of detail, with fun to run features a high priority to us all. The venture into Brass/Hybrid has brought forth much attention, and would be nice to see where this leads in the future. All in all, We should be thankful, that no matter how negative or Positive we are, Our manufacturers keep trying to please us.  I simply ask for a feature rich, fun to run product...Great Post, I would like to see what Lionel's Vision is for 2018.....

I believe from rumors with the Lionel Reps was that the tooling was lost. I could be wrong....but that's what they were saying the last time the came to our shop. Regan would know.

I think I've had my fill of the long articulated locomotives.  Those aren't doing it for me anymore, aside from the ones I already own.  Rather I'm just finding that my interests are now drawn to the smaller and medium-sized scale steamers with increased amounts of detail.  Unfortunately, I suspect Lionel probably isn't making as large a profit margin on those as they can with the articulated monster steamers.

Sooner or later you'll have to make new tooling.  Folks are already getting tired of the same locomotives, re-hashed, with maybe different road numbers.  Unfortunately the above locomotive probably has a smaller market so new tooling may not be financially feasible.

Actually, the root of the matter is the assembly process for UP turbine. If this one was reissued the cost to make it (assembly)would be doubled according to Lionel sources, due to all the small pieces.... so no time soon. If you see the ole one just buy it! Its an amazing locomotive...

Huh? I thought that was the premises of Vision Line engines... all new tooling with all new technology?

All the Vision Line engines I purchased was from new tooling. 

I wish Lionel would invest money in redesigning their smoke unit, so it works well, without the 3 blinks of death!

Yes and no - it used a lot of the same tooling used to make the reissues of the original 700E, but was changed to make some room for upgrades in detail like the illuminated class lights, tender back up light and a fully detailed cab.

VisionLine products may have borrowed some existing tooling in some cases like the Hudson.  But generally speaking the VisionLine offerings have had a sufficient amount of new features or new technology to warrant the name VisionLine.  Some models more than others for sure.  But to characterize VisionLine offerings as a rehash of old tooling would be misleading if downright inaccurate.

Are the GG-1 and Big Boy new tooling?  The Hudson?  Maybe rehash was too harsh of a word but the original intent of VL was to do locomotive not done before in O.  While I certainly appreciate the VL I own even though done before because of the added features, some new from the ground up tooling maybe required such as a Veranda if the tooling was lost.  Yes I guess rehash was inaccurate but I suspect that tooling costs do often enter into the fray to create something not entirely new but with added features.

GG-1 I thought was all new, referring to the parting line issues that were visible after paint? Or was it only new for the Riveted version? Its all a blur.

I know the Tenders were retooled for the VL Big Boy and Challengers... Boilers updated too, so I would vote them as all new except for the chassis.

The Class A is one of my favorites but is Lionel able tp produce that one again from MTH lawsuit?

The rivets version was new tooling the others were modified JLC tooling.

The NH I-5 is a gorgeous engine. I would be all over a vision line I-5!

I would imagine there is a better chance of the I-5 being a brass hybrid offering someday.
