Walthers put this item on sale back in December and as you might guess 'I just had to have one'!  Upon receipt I realized how deplete the speeder is of any mechanical detail...to the point the wheels are simulated and won't turn.  The building is a little better but detailing, accessorizing and weathering will fix it up just fine.

Back to the speeder...has anyone on the Forum ever tried to install railroad wheels on this item so that it could roll on the rails?  To me this would be realistic and make the speeder more believeable.  Would standard size 027 wheels be too big?  If so, is there a source for smaller diameter wheels on an axel spaced for o gauge track?  Besides the wheels, additional detailing, striping, accessories and weathering will also make the speeder a more realistic vehicle.

If anyone has any thoughts, pictures, actual hands-on experience doing this and would care to comment, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Frank

I actually just glued mine (in a temporary fashion) to the small set of tracks provided with the set. I thought about weathering the speeder for realism but then realized that I would then be inclined to weather all of engines and rolling stock and I really don't want to get in to that. So, I have just let it be as it is... I have entertained no thoughts of making it "railworthy" or operational in any sense. It (the speeder) just does not have enough substance to warrant such attention. (my opinion of course) The building and shed are OK and fit nicely on my layout. The building could use a much stronger light I think.

Putting O-27 wheels on a static model that has flanges 20 times larger than scale would make it more realistic????  I have the same set....bought at Hobby Lobby when they dumped the trains....for what I paid it is FANTASTIC. And if the Speeder had O-27 flanges I'd be looking for scale wheels. If you just have to have toy wheels look for some from the K-Line Speeder.

I feel the speeder is best left as a static model. There are others out there that make a better platform for a rolling display.

Regardless, here is my shed and speeder. I installed some glass, painted, decaled and weathered the speeder. For the shed I added a "welding light" module and some extra details and workers.
