hey guys so I want to do something but have no idea if it will work or if it can be done. And if it can be done, how to go about it. Forgive me as it is a bit of a lengthy explanation.
okay, so I have a mth premier Amtrak p42 genesis from the late 90s I got used from eBay installed with tmcc. The owner unbeknownst to me, took out ps1 and put in tmcc. All well and fine but it's got either a f unit or a gp sound chip in it and it just dosent sound right. So I want to swap it for protosound 2.0 meaning I'll have to buy a newer railking version and take out the whole protosound 2.0 unit, marker lights, and probably the smoke unit as well I would figure. (Basically the guts of the railking unit) and what not and put them into my premier engine.
Since I can't find either a ps2 or PS3 complete chipsets and smoke units with an Amtrak p42 sound clip on them this is the only viable option I could think of. I called mth and they want almost 300 for the PS3 unit. But if I send it out they want the chipset out of it.
So I figure, if I'm gonna spend the money for it, might as well get a locomotive itself yank the stuff out of it that I want and need and try and either install (I dont have any experience what so ever to do that) myself, or try and find an authorized repair shop that does protosound swaps / repairs.
Is this possible? Are there other avenues I should look at? And if that's the only way, what should I expect or need to do?
Thank you guys, I appreciate the info and again sorry for the long explanation. Wanted to be through.
