Jim, I wish I could have gone to you store. Looking at the pictures of your store it must have been a great train store.

I never took this Weaver car out of the box until this morning. Unfortunately, the trucks fell apart when I took it out of the box. I guess I got bit by zinc pest. Oh well, still one of my all time favorite Weaver cars. Very surprised no one else has made cars in this road name since then. I never liked the fact that it came with arch bar trucks so now I have a real excuse to get a more prototypical truck under it.

Umm Phil, you can buy the MTH Bettendorph trucks OR wait for the newest Atlas O trucks for Weaver cars to arrive, Those have the Air Line detail.

@prrhorseshoecurve Where? I actually have a couple of Weaver cars that came with the MTH made-for-Weaver trucks but I have never seen them for sale anywhere nor have I ever even seen them in any catalog with a part number. I didn’t know Atlas is going to start producing and selling those trucks. I didn’t see that mentioned in any of the announcements. I certainly hope it happens but I am sure it won’t happen anytime soon. Thanks for the information.

Thank you very much Jim. I guessed I missed them in the catalog. I did see the trucks you are talking about a few minutes ago on the Public Delivery Track website (I also looked on Patrick’s but couldn’t find them). I need the 2 rail versions. I could not find them on either website. I am not home right now but I will check the catalog when I get home. Thanks again. When I find them I plan to get 3 or 4 sets.

Hey guys, one last word on Weaver trucks. I did some research and The Public Delivery Track does have some of the 3 rail MTH made-for-Weaver trucks in stock. The 2 rail versions are not available. I also checked the next to newest MTH catalog and the MTH made-for-Weaver trucks are not listed in the catalog. You an see the differences in these pictures. Left to right is factory MTH 2 rail Bettendorf truck (part #20-89001) , factory Weaver 2 rail steel Bettendorf truck (part #P713), and factory Weaver plastic 2 Rail Bettendorf truck. You can see that the bolster is raised up on the MTH truck and will not work for Weaver cars. Every truck in the MTH catalog has this raised bolster. None look like the Weaver truck. I used 2 rail trucks in these pictures because I had them easily accessible. The same is also true for the 3 rail MTH made-for-Weaver trucks.

Weaver03Weaver04PublicdeliveryThe image to the left was copied from the Public Delivery Track Website under the page for the MTH 2 rail Bettendorf truck part #20-89001. I hope that the 2 rail MTH made-for-Weaver trucks become available someday but what I really wish is that I would have stocked up more on the original Weaver metal truck. I only have two sets left. I am not sure what type of metal Weaver used but it isn't die-cast. Those original Weaver metal trucks (middle truck in the upper photos) will never disintegrate like the die-cast ones did. I don't know why Weaver stopped making the metal trucks perhaps they got too expensive?

Now back to the thread. I was able to dig out two of my favorite Weaver cars. The first car was a special run for the Virginian and Ohio (Allen McClellend's famous HO railroad) but I don't know which train store did it. I didn't come with trucks so I put a set of Accurate O scale trucks on it. The second car must have been someone's conversion car coupler wise because it has the typical 3 rail coupler on one side and a Kadee coupler on the other side.

I wonder if it would be possible to use the lower bolster from the plastic truck to replace the “high bolster” on the MTH 2-rail truck.

"I wonder if it would be possible to use the lower bolster from the plastic truck to replace the “high bolster” on the MTH 2-rail truck."

I won't say it is impossible but I think it will be difficult. On the Weaver truck the side frames have protruding "arms" so-to-speak that snap into the bolster. The MTH truck has a bolster that extends into the side frames and is held in only by the springs. It seems like a lot of work and for me personally I would rather spend the little time I have for the hobby on doing something else.

HudsonJ1e, Thank you for posting two of your favorite Weaver cars. The V. and O. tank car I don't recall ever seeing. Your T.P. and W. box car I remember selling them in our store. Thanks again for posting pictures of your Weaver cars. Please take care and have a wonderful and safe Monday. Here is a picture of your T.P. and W. box car sitting on the bottom self for sale in our store.

I retuned to this hobby in 1990 after a void from 1963 when I was a freshman in high school, in 1990 I went one Sunday to the DuPage County Train Show in Wheaton, Il. My first purchases were Gargraves tin plated track and manual switches and Tortouse Switch motors. Next came the Roco gondola cars, Weaver Bettendorf plastic 3 Rail trucks  and the conversions of these gon's with the Weaver trucks. Further trips to this train show yielded the purchase of Intermountain box car, reefer, tank car and flat car kits and Red Caboose tank car kits. Today the vast majority of may box cars are Weaver PS1's and Weaver steel side, covered hopper cars Weaver PS2 and open top Weaver 2 bay and 3 bay hopper cars. I have no Weaver tank cars, these cars are the stub sill design I have Intermountain, Red Caboose, Kline and MTh full length center sill design. I also have some Atlas O  Airslide hopper cars and Pecos River 50 foot box cars and Weaver flat cars. In an overview, I purchased Weaver because they are O scale cars that are convertible to O scale trucks and couplers or Weaver 3 Rail trucks and couplers, good body detail with less fragile detail parts than the O scale kit car, graphics are very good and the cost of these cars was reasonable.

One final comment on Quality Craft Weaver,  Bob Weaver and his staff including Gary were always customer orientated, open to questions, comments and advice in my telephone contacts.
