I did years ago to an original horizontal drive unit. (you didn't indicate whether yours is single or dual motored) I built it with twin towers so inside room was limited. At the time sound decoders were scarce in O scale. I used a NCE408 and Sountraxx DSX married together.

Later projects of that engine for others had various manf. decoders. Most of them were single tower so there was more room for a larger format decoder.

The single motored unit doesn't require a high amperage decoder. 2-3 amps is sufficient. A LokSound or SoundTraxx decoder will fit nicely. Provided they offer the correct prime mover.

I have about 8 WEaver single motor RS3s and FAs that I have installed NCE D408SR decoders.    One thing I learned was that with DCC the voltage to the lights is a little higher and the bulbs get hot enough to craze the plastic lenses.   I have replaced the bulbs with LEDS.   I had to replace a bunch of the lenses.
