It's finally Friday! A few days ago, I had an an idea about putting reflectors on our older MTH Conrail coil cars, just to make them look a little more modern. I first used yellow electrical tape, but my dad had a better idea. Reflective tape (duh)!

Photos shoot of my new MTH J with PS3.  This replaces the older PS2 version with the curly tether and blackened drivers.  This one is more like the prototype.  I really like it.

Fantastic Job with the conspicuity striping, Steven Michael!!.  I've been wanting to put some on an MTH BN GP30 that I have to make it look more like its prototype.

Please elaborate on the tape dimensions, type and how you did it?  Thanks.

Larry, I can't say I recall the width of the tape, but I'm almost sure it was an inch wide. I cut ~1/8th inch wide strips off of the end of it with scissors, these obviously being as wide as the tape. For the longer reflectors at the ends of the cars, the tape is put on in the dimensions it was cut to. For the smaller ones between the ends of the cars, these strips were first cut in half, then put on. So, to sum it up, cut the 1 inch wide tape in ~1/8th inch intervals (1/8"x1"), then cut however many of these you need for intermediate reflectors in half (1/8"x1/2").

Well my golden spike celebration is right around the corner... Just have to finish my elevated dual track "S" curve!

 

Almost as hard as is to say as it is to make!

More importantly, what size of reflective tape is it, did you buy it that size or cut down a roll of reflective tape?

Could you please tell me if these strips are brighter in color than cars that already have the strips on them from the manufacture? I'm wondering if they will need a coat of dullcoat.

Super photos from everyone again this week.  More MBTA action from my layout.

Reading & Northern ex-Gulf, Mobile & Northern 4-6-2 No. 425 brought an Autumn Leaf Train Excursion from Port Clinton to Jim Thorpe last Saturday and Sunday. She will do the same this weekend. Here she is after a spin on the turntable waiting for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway train to depart at 3:00 PM. Then she will back down and couple on for the return to Port Clinton. Lighting could be better but this was the best angle I could get with autumn colors in the background. When I aimed from the front, glare from the sun interfered. The sun is much lower in the sky that it had been.

Found these in a box; haven't seen the light of day in years.

Early weathering jobs; Weaver cars; weathering can be improved.

 

Had Weaver re-issued the GM&O wood chip cars in the last run I would have bought a six-pack.

 

(BTW - these were in a not-so-climate-controlled area, and much of the "rust" on the wheels is, well, rust. The ultimate in accuracy!)

Joe, the reflective tape is slightly different in color than the painted reflectors that may come on cars that you have purchased. On the contrary to this, the tape IS the correct color, because it is modeling itself.  The painted on reflectors that come on cars you purchase are often partially transparent, and will be a darker shade of yellow on a darker car,  therefore making them the incorrect color. In answer to your question, the color of the tape is slightly different, but this is caused by the painted on reflectors being the wrong color, and the tape being the correct color. Hope this helped out.

Here is a gem I just got from a forum member.  MTH Great Northern F3 from 2000.  It needs a bit of work to get running smoothly, but what a deal!

These Hi Cube offerings are far & few between.

I generally offer two styles, with a Whirlpool appliance load as they generally carried or like this with packing debris.

I have offered black debris on other cars, but not on this type. Not sure if black wrap was available around the 70’s.

I try to do something a little different on each car which also keeps my interest going.

 

(A black cut up plastic trash bag works well to add interest to the car)

That's a beautiful train BARailroad.

What engine did he use please?  Has a scale pilot but the squinty windows look suspiciously like a PW Lionel cab...

 

These were posted awhile back but I wanted to show them again for any of you who may have missed this before.  Jerry Keys of the club put this together. He kitbashed this PRR locomotive from two Williams BL2s and with a first class decorating job he has created a very nice unique piece. It has two PullMor motors in a stretched Trainmaster chassis.

 

What the heck.
