I’ve been running two Lionel models of Ten-Wheeler steam locomotives on my 12’-by-8’ layout this week – New Haven #816 and Boston & Maine #2074. These models look good and run well but, in true Lionel fashion, their prototype is a New York Central Class F-12 4-6-0 locomotive built by ALCo. I also have a third version in the correct NYC livery.

Ten-Wheelers hauled mainline passenger trains in the early 1900s but were superseded in a few years by more powerful 4-6-2 Pacific types as heavier steel construction replaced wood for passenger cars.

The real New Haven Class G-4 #816 was built by Baldwin and went into passenger service in 1904. On my layout, it is pulling heavyweight steel passenger cars.

The real B&M Class C-19 #2074 was built by Baldwin in 1898 and scrapped in 1939. It is known to have run in commuter service around Boston into the 1930s. On my layout, it is pulling two wood-sided passenger cars that are recent models made by Lionel with tooling acquired from MTH. The Boston & Maine Railroad used wood-sided cars in Boston commuter service into the 1950s.

This has been my week to experiment with what track weathering colors and techniques to go with. I used a spare piece of plywood and track to practice some ideas given to me by @PRRMiddleDivision. I used Floquil Rail Brown for the rails, which I'm super happy with. However, I'm still trying to decide the color for the ties. I've tried Mission Models Rail Tie Brown, Rustoleum Earth Brown, and Floquil Roof Brown.

First go at it by simply hand painting. Not a bad start. Ballast is Woodland Scenics coarse gray blend darkened a bit with flat black spray paint.

And yes, I know ballasting is the last thing to do on a layout. This is a test piece and I'm just trying to get an idea of what it's going to look like

Quite happy with the rail color. My new-to-me Conrail Dash 8 looks sharp!

Heavily used rail in Vermilion, OH on Norfolk Southern's Chicago Line. This is the look I'm going for. Compares nicely to the photo above.

I removed the ballast and got out the air brush for the first time to add a thin spray of the rail color to the ties. It looks better, but still not quite there.

I glued the ballast down in preparation for this part. Once it dried, I came back with the air brush to add rail brown to the ballast between the ties to simulate the dirt overspray you see on the main lines.

Now that looks much better, I think?

I may have overdone it with the final pass of rail brown overspray, but I think I'm on the right track (pun intended). What do you all think? Happy Weekend Photo Fun!

Looks great, Jason. I like the touch of brown. I especially like the sides of the rails and the muting of the shiny color of the ties.....really nice......

Ours (above) is similar....3:1 Woodland Scenics coarse gray/coarse cinders.

I'm starting to work on the mountain ridges near Spruce Creek PA and the Spruce Creek Tunnel. This has required me to work on the part of the layout across the aisleway from Altoona and sometimes get up on a step ladder which has resulted in some new and interesting views of the layout. see for yourself...

First, downtown Altoona with the diesel servicing facility in the foreground:

And here are two aerial shots of the same area so you can see how the track is laid out. Mainline is to the right, the throat to the roundhouse and steam engine coaling/sanding facility is to the left, and the caboose and MOW equipment storage tracks are in the center:

and one final shot taken to the left showing the front of the roundhouse, the turntable, and a few engine storage tracks. The recently completed Spruce Creek stone arch bridge is in the foreground. Work is underway out of sight behind me:

That's it for this week!

Sirt, old pictures or is the backdrop and module you photograph on already up in the new house?

Peter, I see your setting up on pavers in the Great Big Greenhouse.  Even though they're probably installed well are there any issues leveling the layout?  Are there level feet on each module or does the club use shims?

I always love this weekly thread to see what everyone else is doing.  I’m working on 2 of my favorite locos, a All Nation F3 and a NW2.  I love these old warhorses and with a little work they run like a Swiss watch.  The F3 will be GM&O along with another one still being stripped. The NW2 will be BAR #20 to go along with a Troop sleeper caboose.

Thanks Scott for getting us rolling this weekend!

It just keeps snowing on the Free State Junction Railway!   Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!  May you have clear tracks ahead

A Western Maryland passenger train arrives with a special guest standing in the cargo doorway of the RPO. IMG_0908

A black bear makes its' way through the snow as does a flanger plow up on the Mountain Division.  A Western Maryland freight's caboose is about to disappear into the tunnel. IMG_0853

A Navy seaman, just stepped off the RDC car, is  arriving home for on a 30 day leave.  IMG_0279

This RDC has been plowing snow as it made it's way to Patsburg station.  IMG_0345

It takes about a half hour longer……

You've done a really nice job with your ballast experiments. Personally, I much prefer this look below without the additional brown overcoat unless it would be blended onto the outer bands of ballast in a lesser tone.  The rails themselves are exceptional. Good work!
