Weekend Photo Fun begins now! Yes, I know it's not the weekend for another two days.  I'm stuck at home not doing anything with the exception of a couple of conference calls each day. The Virginia Museum Transportation is closed and so is my access to the tinplate layout I have been building in the basement. So I was looking through my photos and realized that I started that tinplate layout two years ago next month.
Here is what it looked like before I started April of 2018. I was given an O-Gauge layout table to start the multi-gauge layout.

So I had to clean off the table to begin:

It is a very cold morning in Harrisburg, PA on Nov 17, 1947, when 7,906 people stood in line to tour the Freedom Train. What many were not expecting to see was one of the Friendship Train consists coming into the station and stopping next to the Freedom Train.  This was the only time the Freedom Train met one of the Friendship Trains and the crowd loved it.  There were bands, a parade, and speeches by local and state officials to mark the meeting of these historic trains.

They were parked next to each other for 12 hours as nine PRR X-29 boxcars full of food and other essentials, donated by the people of Harrisburg and surrounding communities, were coupled to the Friendship Train.

I have the trains but not the hundreds of people that surrounded the Freedom Train as the Friendship Train rolled in.  If I ever collect enough figures, including the bands and pom pom girls who must have been freezing in their minimal outfits, I'll do a better re-creation of the meet.

The Friendship Train boxcars are MTH, everything else is Lionel.

Being locked in the house due to the unfortunate coronavirus situation has allowed me to accelerate work on the layout. As such, work is nearing completion on a gap in the scenery that I've been working on for quite some time to close. The specific area is the Tuscarora Creek Valley just east of Port Royal. I don't want to post too many photos until it is 100% complete, but here is a sneak peek of the area. Additionally, now you can see the finished scenery on the east side of the concrete arch bridge carrying PA Route 75 over the Pennsy mainline...I had been posting photos of this area under construction a few months ago. The third picture is a prototype photo I took last summer of the same highway bridge and area where the F-3's are located in the first image.  Of particular note is the curved stone arch bridge, which I consider to be the most difficult to build model I have ever created. It was built way back in the year 2000 and only now is the adjacent scenery nearing completion. This is why I am so thrilled to be finishing this area and sharing these images with you.

A couple of weeks ago I posted photos of a PW Congressional Passenger cars I picked up. Well Paul posted a photo of the reissue set and was teasing me about the additional cars that were release for that set. Taking that as a challenge I went shopping. I not only found the additional cars for his reissue set but also picked up the baggage car that is part of that set. Now I will add them to my PW Set.7152A19C-4A0B-4AD0-B59B-352424D3B044

Neal,

Great shots. If this is what it looks like now I can't wait to see the finished product. You said the concrete bridge was your most difficult build to date and I can see why. From what I have seen you have a few arch bridges that you have built on the layout. Can you give an overview of how you go about this? There was a gentleman, on this forum, who used to build them but no longer does. This means I will have to find someone else or do it myself. I actually need a curved stone arch bridge for two areas on my layout.

Thanks,

Dave

It has been a while since I posted anything, so I'll just make note of a couple of new additions for 2020. The above photo shows my steam roster, with a brand-new MTH N&W 2-6-6-4. Love it! The K-4 is an older MTH Premier PS1 with PS2 upgrade, and my MTH PS2 Camelback. While the N&W is not strictly in keeping with NY&LB, it doesn't matter 'cause I always wanted an articulated.

DSCN7998

And we can't neglect the diesel gang. The lashup is an MTH PS2 GP-9, and a Williams GP-7 with PS2. The F-40PH "Canadian" is MTH PS2, the F-7 units are Williams with PS2. The RS-3 is a Weaver with PS2, and the SW-9 is an MTH PS1 with PS-2 upgrade.

DSCN7984

And the latest structure is the Menards Sauerkraut factory. This is my first Menards, and I really like the detail they put into it. Why a sauerkraut factory? My grandfather had a sauerkraut factory in Trenton, NJ during the 40's and into the early '60's. His product was packaged in glass jars and delivered to mom & pop grocery stores throughout NJ. To honor his factory, I changed the sign from Hermanns to Bayer. (and added a cat to accompany Jack the German Shepherd)

Under the bridges in the cut on my 12’-by-8’ layout. Two truss bridges and a two-span girder bridge carry trains across the cut on the main level. This is a non-operating yard used for storage of trains.

No train operations for me lately. Too absorbed with current events.

Running the R-12

This is one of my workhorse trains. It just keeps running and the board has never had as much as a hiccup.  Great train.

Strap Hangar, I enlarged your photo and was glad to see there were only 1 or 2 passengers in the subway. Definitely not a large gathering of people as is typical in a subway, which is to be avoided during the caronavirus crisis.

This is right around 5pm Thursday night in Chicago. They used to call the hours of 4-6pm rush hour. Not this week!!! Pictured is an Orange Line train at LaSalle and Van Buren that runs from downtown to Midway Airport on ‘The Loop’. Also serviced at these stations are Brown, Purple, Green and Pink Lines. The LaSalle station links commuters with the Metra Rock Island LaSalle Street Station which was the former home to New York Central trains! The empty platform with the green canopy is at the main Chicago library.

Made a small camp fire scene using the Fire LED Kit from Forum sponsor Evan Designs. Used some small stones and dried twigs from my garden, with a bit of ground cover from Woodland Scenics. Mounted all this on a small disc of cardboard to make it portable. Will blend it in to the surrounding area when I get to that stage. The figures are MTH from their railroad crew set.

Here's a small video of the crew warming themselves on a cold night.

Have a good weekend. Keep well!

Great photos guys and bigtruckpete, that is amazing to see no-one walking around or the over crowded stations, I had the pleasure of riding the Elevated on a couple of visits to the Windy City and found them to be lots of fun and the sights and sounds outstanding.

Thanks to all for sharing your great pictures.  Have a safe and healthy weekend.  Guess I'll go paint (my least favorite job around the house).

Cheers,

Fortunately, Arnold, it’s the late seventies on my layout, just before these R-12s were decommissioned in 1981.  No need to worry about the corona virus, just those darn graffiti vandals!

Great subway modeling SIRT! I love subways. We actually have one here in Pittsburgh. It's not too long (only two miles or so) but it's beautiful, and I use it all the time when I go into downtown Pittsburgh.  I modeled it on my old HO layout, but obviously can't logically include one on my current layout depicting the rural Middle Division.

Please post some more images of your subway and tell us more about your model subway.
