Welcome to Weekend Photo Fun Cyber Attack Edition. I'm in South Carolina most of today and I will start the photos. I am not sure how much of the forum will have to be dismantled to fix the current problem but if this thread gets lost, I'll start it again tonight.

Last week of the VMT we finished the Pirates of the Caribbean layout;

Was at the EASTEC Manufacturing Trade Show at the BigE this week. Although it's one of the largest manufacturing trade shows in the US, it only took up 3 buildings rather than the 4 the Amherst Railway Society show uses.

No trains, but you could really outfit a company to make trains with either numerically controlled tools or additive manufacturing. (3d Printing)

Way back in 2001, I bought MTH's Premier EMD FT 103 demonstrator set, 20-2277-1, which was sold as an A-B-A set. While it's a super set that runs, sounds and smokes great to this day, it was not an accurate depiction for the real FT 103 that had two B-units, for an A-B-B-A arrangement, when it debuted in November 1939, shown here.

FT 103

Over the years I thought about buying a different road name FT B-unit and having it re-painted to match the 103 demonstrator paint scheme, but just never got around to it. Then in 2015 MTH re-releases the FT 103 with separate sale B-units, so I'm in! After some delay, they're finally delivered in August 2016, and I order one sight-unseen, 20-20623-3, below.

IMG_0746

I was concerned a bit on how well the 2016 paint scheme would match up with the original 2001 FT set. However once I placed the new B-unit with the original A-B-A set, the paint was a virtual perfect match. The original B is the foreground and the new B is in the background. Looking at both in even lighting, it's hard to tell which is which.

IMG_0747

So now I have a full, complete A-B-B-A set of EMD's FT 103 demonstrator set from 1939.

IMG_0749

But there was one snafu however with the new B-unit - it does not come with a jumper / connecting 10-pin tether to connect the two original A-units together, despite the image shown on the product page. So after searching the MTH parts pages, I eventually figured out what PN I needed to add (don't have that PN right now though) to the new B. I needed a cable ~ 12"-14" long with a male plug on one end, and a female plug on the other.

Adding it through the new B was no problem, after taking off the shell. The male plug side simply pops into the female plug on the end of the original B-unit, below.

The other side was not as basic. Since the new B doesn't come with a tether bracket to attach the female plug to, I just zip-tied the male plug from the A-unit to it's coupler shank, to keep it elevated over the track, and then just plug it into the new tether on the new B-unit, below.

This new hybrid A-B-B-A FT 103 set works like a champ, and looks pretty cool pulling a long string of freight.

Happy Friday!
I can see why a lot of people make trains a fall/winter hobby. Lot's of outdoor activities have held the majority of my time so I wasn't able to get anything big done, but made some little progress on certain parts.

I worked on the Jersey City terminal area mostly & the bridge.
Painted the MTH platform roofs black & wired in the lights. Added a few people & started some ballast. BIG improvement!

Added a road w/ traffic lines, CNJ herald & some concrete walls to the underpass. There is also a light under there, so you can see the cars

Then Ran some trains for a bit-

Just finished an ERR upgrade on a Williams Camelback ,medium steam sounds, fan driven smoke unit , LED lighting, and GRJ's super chuffer.

Alex,

Doug's Camelback look, sounds and smokes great. Kevin, Doug and I will come out to pick them up when ready. Sundays work best for us. Great work.

Cool pics so far. Scott pirates are always winners with the kids.  PennsyPride94 not to sound like a broken record but I like the first three pics too but also the fifth one. Rich and AG both are nice scenes. Patrick always like see your layout and since some of the shots are fall scenes . works as a lead in to mine. I guess its going to be one of those BN type of days

I went over to Engine House Hobbies this morning to pick up my new (to me) Lionel Postwar 3462 Milk Car that I had fully serviced. It runs great! What a load of fun!

While I was there, a large collection of Postwar structures and operating accessories came in. Beautiful stuff but I have no need (or room) for that stuff now. I had been wanting an Evans Auto Loader for my Postwar collection and there was one in the collection, with the box. No autos but the store had a 4-pack of the reproductions on the shelf. A good deal was made....unnamed

In other news, it is about 6 weeks away until I fly out to Portland to ride this.....

So it didn't take much arm-twisting at the LHS this morning when a certain SD70 heritage engine was on the shelf......just in from MTH.....it will accompany my Southern Pacific Daylight A5 0-4-0 from Lionel nicely.

Last but not least, I thought I'd videotape the entire layout running at once....

"can see why a lot of people make trains a fall/winter hobby".

Actually-trains are  part of our Summer shore life

Christopher--- Thanks for posting the NJT pics. Our family has a house-- very near the NJ coast Line. The Bayhead "loop". is only a mile away and we all know the time by the train horns.

So, tomorrow morn, I'll have a couple grandkids for the ride to Bay head bakery. Then to the train loop

and check the yard for engines.

Nothing like munching on jelly buns, while waiting for a" squeeling wheel "train to arrive at the little Bayhead station.  eh! eh!

Floyd

It had to happen. The new diesels gained so much publicity that the Cannonball was no longer front page news. The engineer of the steam train challenged the engineer of the new diesel to a race. The diesel driver agreed and the date and time was set. Three minutes before high noon on the day of the race, local law enforcement rolled up to the starting line. Ol' Rosco and Barney were not going to have any of it.

The racers argued that the race was on private railroad property, but Rosco said, "Not in my town you ain't!" Barney was heard to say something about nipping it in the bud and everyone went home.
