I dug out my 40+ year old PFM Russian Decapod for some air.  Still runs like a champ:

Just for grins, a comparison with the Bachmann Russian:

Even though the Bachmann has finer detail, DCC, sound and the "magic number," I still prefer the PFM.

And after 40+ years, the PFM is still a superior model to the Bachmann.  The cab on the Bachmann looks like crap.   Too bad people are so averse to painting brass steam and dropping in decoders.  A lot of reasonably priced brass sits out there unwanted. 

Without getting out a scale drawing, based on the photo, it appears that the Bachmann is at best a "Believable representation".  Photo from "Frisco Archives" web site.

I have been tempted to pick up some brass steam... but I know I will have to spend a considerable amount of time and money to make it run acceptably.

Then there's the painting part.  You see, I've only had one brass model all my modeling life: A Hallmark Baldwin VO1000.  It sat in the box for decades. Evenually, though, I re-powered it using a Kato drive (the original drive ran like total crap), modified it to represent the prototype I was modeling (a Frisco engine, imagine that), and in all it was essentially ready for paint. Paint that I never applied due to fear of "doing it wrong". (ALL my extensive air brush experience had been using Floquil solvent-based paint on plastic models.)

So, there you have it: The "brass" experience in my modeling world according to me.
